[Prologue] [Chapt 1] [Chapt 2] [Chapt 3]

Chapter 4:

Ohno shuddered as he came across yet another huge rock which looked like it would be a monster or something. He had been swimming for over an hour and the volcano looked no bigger. He was tired and hungry, and not to mention on the verge of dozing off. He had researched that it would take him three solid days to reach the stone wall, but at the rate he was eating his food, Ohno doubt he would make it there.

Still, he has to try. He couldn’t turn back. His parents should be awake by now, and should have noticed that he was missing, unless Sho was pretty good at lying, which Ohno knew he isn’t. Going back would only equals to more studying and being grounded for life.

Ignoring the urge to pop another oyster gummy into his mouth, Ohno increased his speed, hoping he’ll get there faster than planned.

It was raining cats and dogs, making Nino wish he had brought an umbrella with him. Unfortunately, his father’s room overlooked the gates where he’ll be escaping through, so sheltering himself under a raincoat was more practical than carrying a huge, eye-catching umbrella.

Nino was starting to not mind being drenched to the bone anymore, after all, he would end up in the sea, so there won’t be much difference. Hurrying after the other black shadow in front of him, Nino tried to be more positive, but failing so badly due to the gloomy surroundings.

“Here we are,” yelled Aiba over the splashing of rain as it hit the ground. He pointed to a small cove, hidden by huge protruding rocks, the perfect place to turn half-fish.

Throwing the raincoat off him, Nino dipped his huge toe in. The water was freezing! It took all of Nino’s willpower to not abort the mission. His sea-sickness was starting to make his stomach ache and his whole head woozy.

“Here you go,” yelled Aiba, trying to make himself be heard over the rain, giving Nino his bag pack. Nino didn’t know how the latter managed to do it, but Aiba somehow invented waterproof food.

Nino accepted the bag gratefully. Peeling off the clothes that were stuck to his body thanks to the water, Nino folded them neatly and hid them in between the rock where it was impossible to notice it, unless you had super sonic eyes.

Unscrewing the bottle, every cell in Nino prayed that his friend’s invention worked. Over the lips, past the gums the green liquid went as Nino poured it straight down his throat, too scared to try and taste it.

The moment the liquid entered his stomach, Nino felt an extremely strange sensation. The water didn’t feel cold anymore, and he could tolerate the salt water spraying into his eyes. When he looked down, he couldn’t see his two legs anymore. They were replaced by a bright yellow tail. Feeling as though he was dreaming, Nino tried to swish his tail. It worked! He had perfect control of his new tail as though he had it his whole life.

“Aiba, it works,” breathed Nino, looking at his friend to see his reaction.

“I told you it would,” replied Aiba proudly, “But I must warn you, the potion will only last a week, you’d have to return in a weeks time, or you might transform back underwater, and…I don’t want to think about what would happen,”

“I’ll be back by next week,” promised Nino, giving his friend a big smile.

“I’ll be here waiting,” swore Aiba, putting on a serious expression as he saluted to Nino, indicating that he should go.

Taking one long look at land, Nino dove into the sea, adrenaline pumping throughout his entire body. This was the first time he had been so deep underwater without feeling nauseous or anything like that, and it felt great!

All that was left for him was to locate the mermaid civilisation, if it even exists in the first place.

“Sakurai Sho, what is the meaning of this!” bellowed the king of Atlantis at the poor merman who was trembling like crazy.

“I - I’m so- sorry, your majesty,” stuttered Sho, unable to look at the king, “I… I…”

The king sighed as he ran a hand through his grey hair, “what is that Satoshi thinking?” he mumbled to himself.

“I-I’m really sorry, your majesty,” stammered Sho.

“No, it’s not your fault,” said the king at last, “I bet this is some trick of his to make me un-ground him. You tell Satoshi that he can coop himself in his room as long as he likes, but I’m still making him study and he’s still grounded,”

“Yes, your majesty,” said Sho more confidently that before now that he knows the king wasn’t going to have him executed or anything.

“Sho-kun, I’ll leave that boy in your hands,” said the king as he swam off to attend an important meeting.

Once the king was out of sigh, Sho sighed like he had never sighed before. Sho didn’t really pride himself in being a good liar, but for some unknown reason, he king believed him when he said Ohno was locking himself inside his room and refuse to come out until he wants to.

Swimming back inside Ohno’s room, Sho closed the door immediately so that nobody could swim in and notice that he prince wasn’t in his room. Sho sat himself down at Ohno’s table, hoping and praying that Ohno would return before anybody finds out he was gone. In the meantime, he’d just have to act like Ohno was really inside the room with him.

Aiba awoke with a start as he felt himself being hauled up by the shoulders and shaken till his bones rattled.

“Aiba, where is Kazunari?” asked Mr Ninomiya in a stern voice, glaring at the butler.

“Nino? Isn’t he in his bed?” asked Aiba, oh so innocently, as he pretended that he was still half-asleep.

Mr Ninomiya dragged him out of his bed and down the corridor which led to Nino’s room. Aiba was wide awake by the time they got there, “Nino’s not here?” asked Aiba, pretending to be completely unaware of their nocturnal adventure.

“You claim to be Kazunari’s best friend, he should have told you where he was going,” said Mr Ninomiya, trying not to yell at the poor butler.

“Nino didn’t tell me where he was going,” said Aiba truthfully, he was the one who told Nino where to go.

Mr Ninomiya finally released his grip on Aiba, sighing as he did so, “How could Kazunari leave at a time like this?” wailed Mr Ninomiya, burying his head in his hands.

“Maybe he was kidnapped!” cried Aiba, his hands flying into the air, trying to make Mr Ninomiya think that way.

“Kidnapped?!” echoed Mr Ninomiya, shock clearly shown on his face, “Oh my poor Kazunari!”

Aiba bit his lips. Now he had made the situation worse, “Nice going,” Aiba thought to himself sarcastically.

Mr Ninomiya was led to his room by his own butler, leaving Aiba standing alone in the corridor. Aiba sighed, it looks like he’ll just have to carry on pretending that Nino was really kidnapped. Dashing to his room, Aiba got out a pen and paper and hurriedly wrote a ransom note, demanding a million dollars for the safe return of his son.

Leaving the house by the back door, Aiba followed the gates to the main entrance and hastily stuffed the note in the mailbox before anybody could spot him.
