After a busy couple of days when I had my friend J. visiting (which was brilliant) and trying to finish the first draft of my research proposal, things have now calmed down. The first draft is done and sent to my beta readers. So I'm taking a bit of time to read. Started The Help by Kathryn Stockett this morning, which doesn't have a film tie-in ( Read more... )

oh, also thinking of having a week off in the summer to do writing. And staying here so I can visit. Is it nice?

Plawsworth is between here and Durham (about halfway to Sainsbury's from here). Durham is awesome. No idea what Plawsworth is like though. You've seen the countryside...

ah ok. Have a nosey for me if you are passing :) The walking track sounded like a restful idea. New job is proving to be ace but action packed, I think some trees etc will be in order!

If I could barge in here (matildabj's sister) :)

I'm pretty sure Mum and I stayed at those cottages while I was starting Uni at Sunderland and before Mum bought the house where matildabj now lives.

They were really nice from memory, all the mod cons, comfortable and spotless.

The only problem was turning right onto the A167 to go North (dual carriageway) which was a complete nightmare in the morning rush hour. There may be a roundabout there now though.

I think my one top tip for getting PhD funding is that you'll need to communicate why your proposed piece of work should be funded NOW - so I guess I'm saying timeliness and salience are the key things to try to get across.

Cool. I'm not at the applying for funding stage yet, but that's a brilliant piece of advice for when I have to rejig my proposal. Will you have a look at it for me?

Of course- although obviously it isn't my field so I hope it'll still be useful.
