Melon Field 2 [Yuri]

The forest north of the village stretches to the mountain ridge bordering the sea. But before the narrow mountain pass to the sea, before the end of the forest can quite be seen, there is a melon field. The land is a little hilly here, and the forest around it is uneven, but the field itself is perfectly leveled and square. Although interest in the ( Read more... )

Suzaku couldn't hide his astonishment when they reached the field. The colors of the melons were indeed very odd. Even though he had been told there were blue and red ones, seeing them with his own eyes was quite a shocking experience.

After a moment, when he realized it's not a dream (although the whole island seemed to be one), Suzaku came closer to the patch and mused, "So if one breaks a melon, they regain their memories, right?"

Even though she had already seen a blue and a red melon by this point, Matsuri was still amazed when she and Suzaku came upon these particular melons. The green ones were normal, so she didn't even bat at an eye at those. But the shiny rainbow-colored melons... now those were extremely unusual. She was almost tempted to go over and pick one up to make sure they weren't illusions, but she shook her head and just tried to attribute it to Memento's many unique aspects.

Matsuri nodded, although she replied with some hesitancy in her voice, "That's what Gaara-san told me. Well, only some memories, I think. I guess it'd be too easy if we could remember everything just by breaking a melon open, huh?"

"I suppose it would." Suzaku replied with a smile. Looking around, he continued, "But it shouldn't be too difficult to break a melon, right?"

Finally turning his sight away from the unusual fruits, the boy asked, "Which one do you think we should try to break?"

"That's what I thought too, but..." the girl trailed off with a light embarrassed laugh as she recalled throwing her melon at a tree and feeling shocked to see it remain completely intact afterward.

She mused over the possible choices for a few minutes before remarking, "Well, I chose a blue one, and I haven't figured out how to break it yet. Gaara-san has a red melon that's also really hard to break. I think you should try picking a green one or a rainbow one, Suzaku-san."

Izuru blinked at the sight of the oddly colored melons, utterly speechless. He had been told strange melons had recently appeared, but it had none the less been difficult to believe those words until he finally saw a patch ahead. Actually, it was still a hard concept to grasp.

He approached Shiny/Rainbow Melon #1, crouching down and inspecting the unorthodox lump. He poked at it before noticing the sticky sensation on the tips of his fingers, immediately withdrawing his hand as he lightly scowled. Rubbing his hands together, he set to padding the melon's surface, smearing away the little bit of dirt and the like that rested on the top.

And it shined all the more for being cleaned off, but this was simply because the dirt dulling the rind was being wiped away, nothing more.

He sat squatted for the longest time before stifling a sigh. Had he really been expecting something from cleaning a melon? He felt utterly silly and foolish at the thought of it. While he would have resorted to physical methods of trying to pry open the melon, he couldn't bring himself to hit it. Just thinking about it made him feel awkward.

But the melon's cleaner surface was tempting, and he traced his fingers on the smooth skin, writing out imaginary phrases as he quietly recited them.

'Here lies a melon...
Dyed the color of rainbow...
On a perfect patch.'

Once the words replayed in this mind, he came to one conclusion: it wasn't a very good poem. And it sounded like something from a gravestone.

If it was the message like that of a gravestone, the melon was indeed dead with that little ode.

Panting and huffing, Rosette leaned her hands on her knees for a minute or so before righting herself. So this was one of the infamous fields, huh. It seemed like it was a little early in the year for melons, and yet there were still several in the field, shining with various colors. The girl grit her teeth determinedly and went over to grab the first melon in reach, which happened to be red melon #1.

"So, there's a way to get memories back here, huh?"

With that comment, she started poking the melon.

And the melon sat, like a melon.

And got poked.

Because, honestly, what else could it do?

Not even remotely discouraged yet, she tried to consider the situation. Was there something inside the melon that would give memories back? She hadn't really thought this through and hadn't brought anything to try cutting the melon with, but there were other ways of breaking them, really.

Crouching down, she began hitting it against the ground with increasing force.

The melon simply took the abuse as if she were hitting a solid marble rock into the ground.

And the ground was starting to look like that was just what she was doing as well as a slight dent was forming below her efforts.

Clearly the melon was not phased in the slightest.
