Everett says nothing, but manages to get to the DHD to dial the right symbols back to Earth. Left behind, in the dirt, was a large smear of blood where he dragged himself.

"I've lost too much...Too much blood." He mumbles. "Far too much..." If they had a field medic, maybe he could have stood a chance...

She doesn't know how to operate- she barely even knows what a DHD is, let alone how to work it, how to get them home. She had basic field training as far as first aid was concerned, but this... this was completely beyond her.

She stumbles along side him, one arm limp. "What d'you need me to do? Tell me what to do!!"

"I've got this." He mumbles, slamming the first symbol on the device. It lights up, and the Stargate nearby whirrs into life, the first Chevron lighting up.

"Unless you remember the Gate address for Earth, it might be quicker for me to dial us back."

Stargate Operations was a key part of basic training for anyone in the SGC. Of course, Rose wasn't a member of the SGC. The second symbol is inputted, the second chevron lighting up on the gate.

She hadn't meant about getting them home, she'd meant his injury. She'd thought- hoped- he might have some training, some ideas, some instruction for how to keep him from bleeding out all over the forest floor because some gnashing, gnawing giant spider wolf thing managed to get in a good swipe.

She feels useless. Helpless. Her arm is throbbing and numb at the fingers, her shoulder spiking with pain. One of these days, she's going to learn to operate the bloody machinery in case the designated driver can't designatedly drive. "You are not allowed to kip over, d'you hear me? I'll bring you back and slap you to death."

"Listen to me, Rose Tyler." Everett says, putting a bloodied hand on her cheek. "This wound is too deep. There's nothing no-one can do about it... I want my last breath to be on Earth. Please..."

He slams the third, fourth and fifth symbols. "Don't make this harder than it already is..." There's tears on his face

She doesn't even care about the blood smear, she's more focused on the hand pressed to her cheek. She leans into it a bit, even. Her eyes are shining, but she's still in adamant denial. "But you can't, you can't die, I was just... we were... me and you..."

Her good arm clings to his shoulder as he presses down on the symbols. "I don't want you t'go."

The sixth symbol is pressed. All that's left is the seventh. The Point of Origin.

"Damnit, Rose!" He grabs her into a hug, holding back his tears and sobbing. "Don't you dare think I want to leave you!" And it finally breaks out as he cries against her shoulder. "There's no other choice...! I don't want to go..."

((/feels so evil))

Her arms go around his neck, and she holds him tightly- or tries to, with the one arm that can manage it- and presses her face against his neck, hot and wet with tears. It wasn't fair.

She can feel something warm against her stomach, and she's faintly aware that it's probably his blood. He's bleeding all over her, this is her fault, his blood is on her hands and now her stomach, her face, oh, god--

She tugs back to press her lips to his, chokes back a sob because she's trying so hard to keep it together and failing. "Please--"

((sobforever.))

Everett's face is pale and sweaty from the bloodloss. He looks weak, but he still returns the kiss, eventually pulling away.

"This is not your fault, Rose Tyler." Everett mumbles, pressing his forehead against hers. "It could have happened to anyone."

His hand hovers over the last symbol, and he pulls her in. "Get me home!" He whispers into her ear, slamming the seventh symbol and then the activator in the centre. The Stargate activates with the usual ka-woosh sound.

She doesn't know what to say, and her throat locks up a bit, so she just nods against him, her teeth biting down hard into her lip to keep from sobbing. She'll be useless to both of them if she breaks down now.

The gate wooshes to life, and she shoots an arm around his waist, pulling him up with the absolute last of her adrenaline. He wanted to go home, god damn it, she'd get him there. It's more of an awkward, desperate stumbling than anything, leaning bodily towards the left, using every bit of herself to keep him up and moving.

In retrospect, she's not sure how it was possible. It doesn't matter. All that matters is that she gets him through the gate.

And Everett, with the last of his strength, helps them get to the shimmering, puddle-like Event Horizon of the Stargate. And he just falls into it, grasping to try and drag Rose through it as well.

The usual blast of sound and light that acompanies Gate travel lasts for one, very long minute before Everett is spat out of the other end, onto the ramp at the SGC.

She should probably call out for help, scream for the guards or for the doctors, but she can't seem to. This is startlingly like when they first met, except he's... there's so much blood, and he's so much more important to her now than he was then.

And he's not moving. She's covered in blood, spent of energy and unable to carry him any further, they fall together onto the ramp, and she curls, half-sobbing against his chest.

Everett suddenly gasps, coming back to conciousness. He can feel his life slipping away, and he knows just what to do with his last minutes. He grabs Rose's head, to get her to look at him. He wanted her to be the last thing he ever saw...

"Rose... You were amazing..." He mumbles, smiling, despite the racking pain in his gut and the imminent death looming just ahead. "I don't blame you."

It isn't fair. It isn't fair. It felt like they were cheated, their time together was so unbelievably short, they didn't have time to... to do anything. Like they were at the start of a race that was already finished. It wasn't fair.

Her hand slides up from his chest to press against his jaw, her fingers curling against his neck. "It hurts. I don't-- you can't, I-- but I love you--"

Typical Rose, saying things at the last second, when it's too late, ruined by the tears streaming down her face.

The smile widens there. "I love you, too." He mumbles back, before his eyes close and he goes limp, his hand becomes heavy on Rose's cheek.

It's at this point that the medical team finally rush into the gate room.
