Oooh, this is gorgeous and terrifying at the same time. I love the expression on Merlin's face and his hands and the candle and the colours... and the composition and a lot of other things - I'm really struggling to sound coherent here, so sorry about that :)

In short, I love what you did with the prompt (and really, really hope that Arthur is somewhere in the background searching for Merlin). I also can't help wondering if Uther is saying anything to Merlin.

I couldn't decide which way I thought Uther would go. I see him either as being just totally silent and inexorable and impossible to reason with, almost robot-like in his efficiency in getting the job done.

Or maybe talkative, and charming, and apologetic, and yet still inexorable and impossible to reason with and the bricks still piling up, no matter what Merlin said to him.

This is wonderfully well done. I'm really tempted to use it as inspiration for a story, but I'm in the middle of doing a rather lengthy story right now so it may be a bit before I'd get to it. Still, it is truly evocative---and horrifying, just as it should be! I'll write and ask permission once I get to a point where I could do the story.

I might, (BIG emphasis on the "might") have a go at writing the story myself. Just for a bit of fun, as I've not tried writing Merlin and it would be fun to have a pitch at it at least once. But even if I did, I don't think it would matter if we both had go, since the stories would turn out very differently. (For one thing I can guarantee yours would be better. *G*)

Wow, this is brilliant (and terrifying)! Merlin's expression (one of his most heartbreaking!), his hands, Uther's hand - everything, I just love it! I'm sorry I'm not more coherent/intelligent about this, but thanks so much for sharing!!
