tourista ecclesia

So…I’ve been crushing something terrible on Orthodoxy lately, and want to go visit a Vespers service at one of the churches in Portland. Unfortunately it’s a drive, about 75 miles one way, and so it’s not something one can do all that spontaneously!

Options! )

orthodoxy, road trips, church, portland

I mainly chose the Antiochian option because I love the idea of the liturgy in Arabic (though being able to pick up on some of the Greek at the others would definitely be cool), but I've also heard that Antiochian parishes are especially friendly because there are often so many converts among them. But of course that's mostly un-empirical hearsay, and I'd bet that any one of these would be a beautiful experience. From the websites, too, it does seem that they are all at least somewhat open to, and expectant of, visitors.

Whichever one you choose, I hope you'll post about it!

And thank you for the link to the Wheaton piece on Ancient Faith Radio -- I'm looking forward to listening to it as soon as I get the chance!

Glad I shared the podcast link then! I though probably you had already heard it.

I downloaded a bunch of podcasts from Ancient Faith radio on Friday morning and burned them on cd to listen to on my trek to Greek class but the format didn't work in the car. Grr.

Yes, the three churches I mentioned do seem very open to visitors. I looked at the websites of all the online Orthodox churches around Portland and and one of the first things I checked was if there was a section on the website mentioning visitors.
