EPILOGUE

Ryeowook smiled. In fact he had been smiling all week. Nothing but empty smiles since Yesung told him he was going to propose to his girlfriend. All Ryeowook could do was smile and congratulate him stiffly. His cheeks were starting to hurt, his lips were starting to crack, but he was the best friend, he had to smile. It’s not that he didn’t want Yesung to be happy, but deep in his heart he had hoped that Yesung would be happy with him.

The week passed by before he knew it. The week passed by before he could do anything or say anything to change Yesung’s mind. I’m in love with you He could have at least told his hyung that much, but that would have been selfish. He couldn’t ruin Yesung’s moment. So when the day came, he sent the love of his life out the door with a Good Luck! even though he didn’t mean it.

He thought he’d be okay. He lied to himself and told himself it was okay. He told himself it didn’t hurt. He could have believed himself, but Sungmin-hyung had to open his big, fat mouth. You should have just confessed, Wookie He had managed to keep himself just detached enough not to cry, but the tears came flooding in. What could he have done? It was a losing battle. Yesung didn’t love him back.

Ryeowook couldn’t hold it in anymore. It hurt. His whole body hurt. His heart ached. It felt like there was a part of him missing and it was the saddest thing he had ever experienced. He left the night’s dinner in Sungmin’s hands and retreated to the room he shared with Yesung. The tears wouldn’t stop, they kept spilling over on their own accord. Ryeowook flung himself on Yesung’s bed, the sheets still smelled like him. A warm citrus with the slight musk of smoke. He cried harder. If the tears wouldn’t stop he’d let them flow freely. He would cry as hard as he possibly could until there were no more tears to cry. He fell asleep on Yesung’s bed, his energy completely spent, but at least his heart felt a little lighter.

He didn’t dream this time. There was nothing but a deep, black abyss cradling his exhausted body. He floated through the darkness, he was surrounded by an eerie silence there was nothing to do but rest, but then there was a sudden ringing noise echoing through the silence. Ryeowook’s eyes fluttered open. He could still hear the ringing, it was the phone.

Yesung woke up dazed and confused. He was surrounded by bright lights and white walls. He momentarily entertained the idea of heaven, but the IV drip pierced in his right arm was proof that he was still alive. So he was in the hospital, he grimaced. He must’ve been carted off in an ambulance when he fainted.

Ryeowook was sleeping in a chair next to Yesung’s hospital bed. There was a blanket draped over him. So they all came. Even though only Ryeowook was in the room, he knew Sungmin and Kyuhyun had come too. Yesung smiled softly, at least someone loved him. He made a mental note to treat his roommates to a feast once he had returned the engagement ring.

She didn’t come. It was over. He had waited all day, he had waited desperately, but it was alright, because it was the last time he’d fight for their relationship. At least he had given it his all...but it still hurt.

Yesung lifted a shaky arm and traced his fingers over the delicate features of Ryeowook’s face. The younger man’s eyes shot open and he grasped Yesung’s hand frantically. He leaned forward and hugged Yesung, “Hyung! Are you okay? What happened? Oh my god...”

“I‘m fine,” he answered automatically.

“Why did you stay out in the rain like that? The doctors are afraid you might have pneumonia.”

“I was waiting,” he said simply.

“Hyung...” Ryeowook’s voice was caught in his throat.

“Let’s go home, Wookie.”

Ryeowook immediately started nagging about colds, flus, and pneumonias, but he eventually gave in to Yesung’s pouting and took his roommate home.

Yesung spent the next couple of days at home with Ryeowook hovering no further than five feet away. His roommates all acted like someone had died. He was alive as far as he could tell. He fiddled with the ring he had bought several months ago. It would serve him better as a big screen tv.

He thought back on all the memories and laughed. He wasn’t sad at all. He wasn’t disappointed or depressed like his roommates assumed he would be. They weren’t meant to be together, she knew it before he did. They were over. Proposing was a last ditch effort that would have only earned him a few bitter years of marriage.

“What are you doing, Hyung?”

Yesung turned to Ryeowook with an innocent smile, “Just getting some air.”

Ryeowook slipped a jacket over the older man’s bare shoulders, “You should stay covered up.”

Yesung slipped the jacket back off, he was perched on the edge of his desk wearing nothing but a thin tank top and a pair of sweat pants. “It’s too hot.”

“You don’t look hot.”

Yesung was sweating and shivering from a fever, but he still insisted on sitting in front of an open window that blew in cold air. Ryeowook sat down next to him and wrapped an arm around Yesung’s shoulders, trying to give him as much warmth as possible. Yesung may shrug off a jacket, but he wouldn’t push Ryeowook away. He flashed Ryeowook a quizzical look before he cuddled closer, his ragged breaths brushing against the younger man’s cheek.

“Ryeowook...”

“Yes, Hyung?”

“...you don’t have to worry so much. I’m okay.”

Ryeowook looked down at his flushed face, “You’re sick, of course I’m worried.”

“You don’t have to stay...here. I’m not going anywhere.”

Ryeowook ran his fingers through Yesung’s hair. “Let me stay with you.”

“Why?” Yesung pulled away from him, “Are you staying around because you pity me? I got dumped so I look sad and lonely?” He was tired of his roommates treating him like some delicate piece of glass. He was sure they had better things to do than watch over him all day.

Ryeowook frowned, “I’m here because...I love you.”
