And my life is forever changed. For the better, I hope.

I've joined the rank of file of the forever-altered. I'm a fellow hyster-sister. After many assorted girlie problems, I finally had a total hysterectomy last week, along with some other bladder work. I have not back-read any posts from my friends, and don't plan in doing so, because there is just too much and I can't sit at this computer chair ( Read more... )

I was thinking of getting one myself. Do you mind if I ask why you had it done?

Get well soon!

I asked 8 years ago, and they said no. I asked again a couple years ago, and they said no. (We have an HMO). Unless there is a tumor or cancer or something like that, they say no. My whole life, my cycle has sucked big time. My mom promised after I had a baby, it would improve. She lied. (Well, not really; it worked that way for her, but not for me.) I always had massive cramps the first day-- the kind that squeeze so hard you through up. I'd hemmorhage day 1 which always left me anemic. I started getting a migraine along with it, don't know why, but some people DO refer to them as period headaches, that would last up to 5 days.... a little less than a migraine, but worse than your standard headache. The doctor had me on birth control pills for all these years to combat the cramping (and that worked) but for god's sake... my hubby had a vasectomy but I still had to keep taking these pills. Finally, I would breakthrough bleed, so they had to keep changing brands and dosage. 6 months ago, I just quit taking them but then bleed every two ( ... )

(oops-- guess the message was too long. wish it'd give me a marker of some kind...)
my last sentence was going to say;

" Many of my friends say it was the best decision they ever made. I hope this holds true for me to.

And thanks for the well-wishes!"

Wow! The reason I was wondering was because I have always had heavy periods that last 7 days where I get heavy clots (and cramping). I went to a specialist here about a year ago and they told me I have fibroids on my uterus as big as my fist. They said they're not cancerous, so there's not really anything they can do about it unless they bother me. Well, they DO bother me with the clotting and heavy periods, but I don't have the money for surgery (or insurance). I'm tired of getting blood on everything and tired of having to go to the bathroom every 5 minutes to change my pad. Sorry if that was TMI. Anyway, I'm thinking of doing it one of these days. Either that, or I wish I could go through the change of life soon!

Thanks! I'm already feeling better, but much of that is because I'm celebrating the thought of no more accidents!

And I've separated the pile of undies into keepers and tossers..... LOL!

I'm glad you came through it ok, and I must say I'm a little jealous. I'd love to be rid of mine.

I understand your jealously. I've REQUESTED one twice in the last about 8 years, always was told no, they don't automatically do them unless there is a serious problem. I guess constant, lifelong pain and suffering don't count. It took a prolapsed bladder that needed repair to get them to say "now we have to do a hysterectomy" because the end results of the bladder repair are so much better if the uterus is out (if you are at the stage in life that you are I are at...)

I was really looking forward to is, except the procedure itself. I'm a wimp. But I'm doing great so far.

my nurses were laughing at me-- said I sure seemed to be in good spirits! (They don't know that when I'm nervous I talk and laugh alot.)

When my anesthesiologist was trying to "stick me to put me to sleep, they couldn't find a vein (typical for me). Finally, two were trying, on each arm. I was stuck 12 times total before they liked it. My arms were on these extended boards with a doc on both sides of me, and I said "Hey, I just saw a movie like this, and it didn't end too good!" They started laughing..... guess they saw The Passion of Christ also.... :)
