One thing I've noticed and been rather curious about for some time:

Why do people censor themselves? Now, I hardly mean this in some larger, deeper sense where, oh ho, we censor our true thoughts and desires and whatnot. No, quite literally. People can't seem to use full profane words, yet they're willing to use half, or one fourth, or well, ( Read more... )

Yesss. Really, though. I want to know why the people who do it do it! Because it just seems really lame to me.

I agree about 90%. The remaining 10% being when people like me do it, speaking out loud.

Because "did he just say what I think he said?" "No I didn't, I don't curse bitch."

Just to play some devils advocate.
Some people don't do it just for their benefit, but for others. In a society as diverse as ours, we must be watchful of our actions, speech, and intentions because you never know who might be around. While I have no qualms screaming FUCK off the top of a tall building, the people below might take offense. Now while I don't regularly give a shit who the hell I offend (sometimes) other people are far more sensitive to their peers confort level.
Furthermore, people's need to censor themselves might come from habbit as opposed to within. If a person is instilled from birth never to say 'bad' words then they will grow up to to stray from such expressions. Even when the person grows up to have different values, the person might still censor themselves from being beaten everyday (or something to the similar effect) for using the word shit.
That's really all I can think of.
I hate when people refer to curse words as 'bad' words. Completely ignorant statement.

Agreed. Usually it's people being considerate towards others, sometimes it's because of a person's religion, and sometimes it's because the person really wants to curse someone out without suffering the consequences, or so they think.
