Darkness is cheap, and Scrooge liked it.

I got up at 4:00 AM today to catch a bus to be at work by 6:00. I and my coworkers spent the day trying to protect the bottom line while not ruining Christmas. We'll do this until December 24. Midway through the day someone sent the link about the Wal-Mart employee who was trampled to death by shoppers. If I could add to my "I am thankful for" ( Read more... )

The best parts of this season are: having and making time to reconnect with those I love, whether they are family-by-blood, family-by-choice, or friends; having and making the time to slow down the outgoing and focus on being at home and an introvert; avoiding crowds and noise and displays of external happiness in favor of intimacy and quiet peace.

These days the world seems to blast "Deck the Halls"; I hum "Silent Night". I celebrate differently. :-,

I've said before, when people feel sorry for me about growing up JW, that I don't really know what I'm missing. It's not like these things were suddenly taken from me. In fact, I'm a little uncomfortable now when people ask me to celebrate with them. I feel like I don't know the rules, you know? In any case, every year I see something that makes me glad to not know what I'm missing.

Speaking of reconnecting, I am looking forward to seeing you at dinner this evening. :)

For me none of these holidays are about stuff. I could care less if I got presents (though the kitchen-aid stand mixer is really nice). Most of those holidays are about hanging out with my family and talking. If it wasn't Thanksgiving my sister wouldn't have come home to celebrate it and I wouldn't have seen her.

You're so right. Holidays are all about consumer whorism, overeating and rushing around while yelling at your family.
December 25th meant hanging out with my awesome grandma and aunt all day. And it's my dad's birthday.

This year I'm making scarves for a few people, that's about it. I don't expect anything from anyone, and I'm working for 12 hours on the x mas.
New Year's Eve is actually Boyfriend's Birthday Eve, so that's sort of a holiday.

For me, its cheeseburgers under the Christmas tree, and eggnog.
Black Friday is just awful.

I love Christmas. I think the rampant consumerism is pretty awful, but I love finding the 'perfect' gift for people (just not on 'Black Friday'). I love decorating the tree, baking cookies with my mom, eating a big dinner with my parents, driving around looking at holiday lights...and of course, the Charlie Brown Christmas special.

I mean, if it's not your thing, it's just not your thing. I'm not even really that Christian, but I figure that almost every major religion or culture has their form of a get together when it's cold and the days are long and dark, and this is ours.
