I was just trying to find a 四字熟語 book yesterday, when I realized that it's the one area of Japanese in which I'm severely lacking. Do you have one that you'd recommend?
Also, did you say that you'd gone to a Japanese language school here? Is it one you'd recommend? Details, please.
I have a few books. Both I used for my thesis. Both have a contributing author 島森哲男 四字熟語の泉 and 四字熟語ー四文字が語る悠久の知恵。 I recommend both. The first one is good for better known expressions, with shorter explanations. The second one, the one I used for my thesis, this one had longer explanations of less well known expressions. There are many books on the subject. I attended a 6 week summer program at IUC http://www.stanford.edu/dept/IUC/
Though I suggest that if you are going to spend the money, you should go all in and do the 10 month program. It is supposedly the best program in Japan for native speakers of English.
