The boy next to me is Drango....he has no speech and rarely makes any facial expressions. He quickly became my little pet. I loved having him around. He would never approach me but whenever I went up to him he would grab onto my hand and just hold it. After he got more comfortable with me he would squeeze my hand and laugh. ( Read more... ) -

I am traveling at 600 mph over Canada right now. The sun is setting outside and it is a gorgeous sunset. My flight took off later than it was supposed to and in order to avoid a turbulent flight we went way north and way out of the way. We should land 30 minutes later than expected. I have been in Kenya for 24 hours now. My luggage didn't make it to Kenya with me. So I haven't changed or brushed my teeth yet. Last time I did was Thursday morning and it is now Saturday night. Needless to say I feel rather shitty. Our driver also forgot to pick us up. Luckily a guy at the airport knew our driver and called his cell phone for us ( Read more... ) -

For some reason I wake up at 5 am every morning and cant fall back to sleep. Then I am tired all day. Hopefully once I start working my body will adjust and get a normal routine. Today is my first day at work, I am looking forward to it. I arrived at my house yesterday. My Kenya mom, Mary, is great. She is 68 years old, has 4 boys and 1 girl ( Read more... ) -

2nd day at work was fairly uneventful. I was in the preprimary class today. I didn't expect it to be anything like school at home but I did expect it to be more than this. The teachers pretty much just let the kids play. So I mainly just sat around and watched the kids play. I tried to play with them but it is difficult because only 2 of the kids ( Read more... ) -

Today the physical therapist came to school. He comes only on Wednesdays and Fridays. He spent most of his time talking to me about HIV and other sexual topics. Everyone has so many questions about America, it's pretty funny to me. We had a 10 minute conversation about why Americans prefer the male condom over the female condom...not exactly what I ( Read more... ) -

It is the end of week 1!!!!!!! It has been a great week. I have already learned a lot from the school. It is a really great school and program. The children are so self efficient. The older children keep an eye on the younger children. They all clean the school and the housing quarters. They have a consistent schedule so all of the children know ( Read more... ) -

We went to church with Mary today. The Cathedral was beautiful inside. The priest talked about how everyone thinks Americans are wealthy but in reality Kenyans are much wealthier. He pointed out that Americans have big houses, nice cars, and material items but they have lost touch with their friends and family, and of course God. It is true, the ( Read more... ) -

We finally got our water back!!! Rachel and I were so excited to take a shower, it was heavenly. At work we set up a sensory room in the Physical Therapy room. We bought backpacks and filled them with rocks to use as a weight vest that we use at home. It can really help the brain process info for children with autism.
