I think that sentence (the long one) is fine (if... you know... you don't put long parenthetical interjections in after every few words).

Where are you going to school? I know of at least one religion professor at USC who is a devout (correct usage?) athiest. His class is apparently required if you want to get a religion minor or major at USC too. His views, needless to say, are not appreciated by many of his students.
