I've been seeing a huge upsurge recently in the abuse of the phrases "may have" and "might have" by journalists, generally for quite reputable news sources. This may well become my personal pet grammar hate (normally I'm an equal-opportunity grammar nazi).

My best friend, after reading that last post, was pretty dismissive. He commented that he had "a terrible allergy to vague optimistic hope and discussions about anything further than the near future/past".
