Since Redwood is a bad chip-seal job, I don't know that the gravel can be "cleared off". If you load the surface up with some hard turns, it feels like it'll just break loose at any time.
Basically wondering if the completely loose stuff on the top layer has cleared off and left the road... the stuff that's just mostly loose doesn't scare me as much as the stuff that's completely loose ;)
I didn't slide around anywhere, although it's probably on the apexes of right handers if you get too close to the yellow line.
I remember Redwood in the pre-chip seal days. 100 miles a day of commute between Daly City and Livermore, with 10 miles of Redwood between Castro Valley and Oakland. I still managed to wear the sides of my tires out before the centers - that was great :)
I just took that road for the first time last weekend (though we might've been on skyline too/instead, i'm not sure). I'm in SF, and have explored the north bay and south bay quite a bit, but for some reason, I'd never paid much attention to the east bay roads. This will soon change. :D
You may think differently, but I believe my chances are better on the freeway with light traffic. I'll take the predictability of that over the randomness of wildlife when my well-being is at stake.

The deer I hit was at a full run, and came from the left and slightly behind me across a field.
