So...

Last night was one of those nights where I realized that much of my passion for writing has gone. I had meant to work on it, but between the boredome during the daylight hours, returning home to deal with a crushing amoung of Lethe work (and drama, thank you Tor, for being greedy), I just wanted to play Civilization V all night long. When I finally ( Read more... )

Well...I think there's no point to writing unless you get some joy out of it. Otherwise, it's a lot of time and pain and the results are a total crapshoot.

What's wrong with playing Civilization V if you feel like it, so long as you remember to eat and sleep occasionally? It is fun, right? Having fun is good for you, especially if you're depressed.

Mm. My dad used to say something similar, and then I started cutting him off - because, well, it's an isolating, co-dependent rhetoric.

On the one hand, yeah, people will screw you over. Sometimes. It's the law of averages. On the other hand, given the chance, sometimes they won't. It seems worth the gamble.

It can be. It can also be a source of inner strength in that you aren't relying on your friends to be everythign to you.

Would you consider dating someone else with similar issues or would that just be a disaster? There's just another guy I know in fandom who really liked one of your books but he's got issues with depression and the like so I don't know if you two would just get each other better than other couples or sink into a mutually destructive thing.

I am sorry that the passion is hiding from you. I think it comes and goes like the tide; sometimes it is all I can do to do the blogging for dollars crap that has to be done and after that, there is nothing at all left - and my own internal standards are not nearly as high as yours!

But there is a point in it - not necessarily financial, and not necessarily fame - but in the sense that what we do does make a difference here and there in the lives of readers, maybe big, maybe small, but we are making people who they are in some way with the words we pen. I think that is the point.

As to what your Dad said, as to counting on parents, you've been luckier in that score than me, and as to spouses of whatever persuasion, sometimes all you can count on is the fact that albatrosses have big wings, you know?

Do you want me to jump on people with stompy boots? I shall try my best.
