My favorite guilty pleasure, lately, is watching the you tube video of Shakira doing "Hips Don't Lie" at the Grammys. I had heard her years ago, and it's not really my thing, but this year, as I was trolling the interweb, I saw an article about that performance. The writer, entranced, was going on about how she should have her own show, every night

This was really beautiful and reminded me of all the best of our life in San Diego. I ache from missing people right now, but soon, we'll have a garden and see each other most every day and it will all be worthwhile.

In Los Angeles, in the 40s, they had a very jivey, slanged-out form of Spanglish that was exactly the thing you describe. You can hear it in lalo Guerrero's records from the period, like "Chicas Patas Boogie" or "Marihuana Boogie".

I'm glad to hear from someone else who thinks she's fascinating. Online, there are some really interesting quotes from Gabriel Garcia Marquez, who is also really into her.

I think that more and more people are moving towards a true ethic of simple living - maybe out of necessity, but still.
