On the Cuban National Baseball Team and Their Recent Loss

Cuba lost to Japan in the final of the World Baseball Classic yesterday, 10-6. I was pretty bummed out, partially because I'm a fan of Cuba in general, despite the rampant human rights violations and senile, corrupt leadership. It's in my nature to root for the underdog, especially when the underdog was the only socialist nation in the Western ( Read more... )

My favorite part of the World Baseball Classic was the fact that the U.S. had hands down the best team in the tournament, however because they couldn't get 25 multi-millionaires to work together teams like Korea and Cuba who had few if any major leaguers were able to show their dominance, and ultimately, even though Cuba lost, the fact that Japan won is better for baseball than had the U.S. won.

Yeah, Ken Griffey sure pulled through.

I dunno. It was obvious they didn't care, and they were disrespecting the game by so blatantly not doing it to play, but for publicity and money. Fuck the USA team.

Wow Evan, that was an amazing post. It's amazing you're able to take a topic, like baseball, that ordinarily can seem so dull to so many people, and look at it from an angle like that.

There's creative genius in you yet.

By the way, Evan. Do you ever listen to Frank DeFord's sports commentary on NPR's wednesday Morning Editions? I think you'd really like them.

If someone had to beat Cuba though, it should be Japan. I was initially rooting for Korea to beat Japan in the semifinals, because they seemed less expected to win, but Japan had the second fewest MLB players on their team (I think), second, of course, to Cuba, who had none. Japan had Ichiro though, and he counts as like sixteen normal MLBers.
