Chicago was a blast. It's been a while since I spent much time in a really big city, and the prospect of living there was actually exciting. Downtown is great - a bunch of us prospective students went out to Greektown on Friday night for dinner, and we got to see a lot of the area while we were enjoying (lawlz) Chicago's public transit system. I'm leaving this Thursday for the University of Chicago's History Day, where I'll meet with all the professors, administrators and assorted bigwigs in the History department. I got me reply back from The University of Washington, and they didn't admit me. It wasn't a great fit, though I was looking at them seriously as my second pick for a number of reasons - it's an MA program first, and that would have given me the credentials to make a really strong push at the schools I (hypothetically) didn't get into this time. Pending official word from the administrators who approve such things, the University of Chicago has offered me a five-year package with the deluxe parka stipend - they want to give me more parkas than they even publicly claim to offer. This is about as savage as it gets ( Read more... )

I've been accepted to the University of Chicago! They are right up there among they very top schools, period - neck and neck with Harvard, Stanford, Berkeley, and Yale. Wow. If I get a funding offer from them that at least includes a remission of tuition, that's going to be the shit.

No luck with the University of Minnesota. It's a minor surprise, since it's a less competitive school than Wisconsin (for contrast), but I expected some of that anyway. I certainly know of one person who will be pleased that Minnesota isn't in my future.

I got an unexpectedly early reply from the University of Wisconsin, and I've been accepted to their PhD program in History (11th ranked, nationally). I'm pretty stoked, because it's a good school and an excellent backup choice, should I miss out on the programs further up on my list.
