"Jake, man. How's it going? Uh, you wanna go with me and hopefully a couple others to South Dakota to go grab a scientist and make him get me my brother back?"
Subtle, Jake. "Not in so many words. . . . I finally got into the network this weekend, and well, I figured a small team going in would be better than just me."
Mostly because Jake and Scully would both kill her, and Peter seemed to think it'd be fun.
Jake had kept up the jerk line the first few times Caroline had called to check in, worried about his weird, gray rash and headache and opposite fever and freaking foul attitude. Obviously his annoyance with her checking up on him had resulted in his outright refusal to answer his phone when she called, sending her straight to his stupid voicemail message.
"Jake, you promised to answer!" Caroline held in her sigh and tried to sound sweet in an attempt to mask her worry. "Meaning I expect you to actually answer your phone. But since you haven't, you get to call me back!"
Waiting for Jake to call was so not working out well. After the first message she'd given him two hours which seemed like eons, if Caroline was honest. And then she gave herself another hour to overthink what her message was going to say. Only then she spent too much time listening to the dorms around her and wishing she couldn't hear that well because it was freaking her out
( ... )
Caroline woke up cursing herself. She hadn't meant to fall asleep, but her research and worry had apparently exhausted her and whose eyes wouldn't slip shut after failing to shut out the waterworks? Instantly she was checking her phone and nearly ready to storm up to his room for the lack of a return call.
"Hi, this is Caroline Forbes. Again. Hopefully you remember my voice since I'm supposed to be your girlfriend and all. I'm calling to make sure you're not covered in gray scales by now or dying of a fever or something. You didn't call me and you're still not answering and...fine. If you don't care, I don't care."
Well, that was a big ass lie. "Okay, so the problem with saying that is how I do care, and I'm kind of beyond frustrated that you don't seem to be willing to talk to me," she sighed at her clock, and hoped he was sleeping it off or something. "But it's late. Whatever, I'll come find you tomorrow. I love you, you idiot."

"Network?" he repeated, mostly just confused. "Hang on. Are you in your room? I'll come by."
