I went with Ian B-J to see Hair! tonight. and it was awesome. I didn't think i would be all that impressed. but there was this one chick, who didn't sing nearly as much as i would have liked. but she opened the show. and it was velvet covering the audience, my mouth was dropped for the whole opening number (which is "aquarius"). Then she went ( Read more... )

don't transfer courtney! stay at oxy and become a well rounded person and then go to grad school to pursue your passion. maybe if you had gone to a conservatory you'd already be starring in big musical productions, but think of what you'd be missing out on! you'd never have the time or opportunity to learn french, or to study in africa for a semester, or make lots of friends who have interests besides theater! this is your life courtney! it shouldn't revolve completely around what you want to do for a career. not to say that it's wrong to have a great deal of your life revolve around what you want to do for your career, but you need to have other things in your life that make you happy, and the most interesting people are people who have a really wide range of things they are interested in and can do.

this got really long. hopefully this isn't coming off as preachy.

err.. i need to sleep. anyway. moral of this story is DON'T LEAVE!!

Agreed on all points.

If all I wanted in life was to be really good at the trombone, I would have gone to a conservatory. But I want a well-rounded education instead of just being some overly focused dipshit. That's what grad school is for.

Oh, one point I disagreed with: if you (Courtney) were at a conservatory, it's even less likely that you'd be starring in a big musical by production by now. Because you'd be freshman, and there would be 500 overly-qualified seniors auditioning for the same role as you, and your chances at getting noticed there are slim to none. At a liberal arts school, you have a chance to get more experience than you would at a place with such intense competition.

Candide was indeed a mess, but it was hardly half-assed. It was a very good production. And before that, they did A Little Night Music.

I don't know, yet, what the musical will be, but it'll probably be something different and wonderful.

And also, next year there's going to be Alan's comps project, and Jennie's comps project, and all sorts of musical opportunities.

Indeed. I totally felt the same way for a while. I thought that the department was very anti-musical for most of last year. Then in Candid, I found where all of the people like me had been hiding. There are musical people here, the just keep quiet during the Shakespeare season.

Cool. That's really what's gonna help me get more into this whole theater stuff. Music is fun.

Courtney, I hear you girl. Not because I do musical theatre, but because there have been times (when I'm not in a play, for example) I feel I'm not doing what I want to be doing. It had been so long since I had been in a play before As You Like It, and my heart would hurt, just like you described. I feel you. My suggestion? Get involved in musical stuff somehow-- whether that means getting involved in comps projects and the musical next year, or finding something off-campus that you want to do, or even just watching a bunch of musicals and getting yourself really educated... it will fulfill you to do SOMETHING, even if it's not the ultimate step of being cast in a Broadway play. Do what you can right now to satisfy it. You're already taking voice lessons and jazz and tap... work on some audition pieces over the summer, maybe. It'd be a good place to start. I feel you on the frustration. It'll fade I think. Love youuuuu! Oh yeah, and DON'T LEAVE!
