Chapter 13
He hadn’t stayed long after that.
Ohno hadn’t been able to stand the uncomfortable silence any longer and Ninomiya seemed to have fallen asleep shortly after uttering those last words anyway.
Leaving behind painful silence.
Nino’s hurtful words had burrowed deep into Ohno, didn’t want to leave his body again and had taken up permanent residence in his head, in his thoughts. And in his heart.
He didn’t understand how things had changed so quickly between them. They had been lying in bed together, arms around each other, and now there was a distance between them, a deep trench that seemed insurmountable to Ohno. With every day that passed he lost a little more hope that he would ever see Ninomiya again.
On top of that the days seemed to stretch endlessly. Seconds seemed to last hours, they didn’t want to pass. But Ohno held onto his foolish, unfounded hope, even though he himself thought his behaviour was ridiculous. Ninomiya would not want to see him ever again now; even their last meeting had already been forced.
Yes, Ohno was waiting for Masaki to come to the club and tell him that Ninomiya never wanted to see him again.
‘I just left… after all. I ran and he still paid me for the whole evening…’
Weighed down by these thoughts Ohno spent night after night at the club sitting around and not even trying to attract customers. His wages became less and less every night and his mood became more and more sombre.
‘Somehow I still hope that he will come back… Haven’t I thought I’d never see him again before? And I saw him again after all… But this time… is this really the end this time?’
And with these thoughts another day of suspense, of yearning, ended and Ohno asked himself how many such days would follow until he would finally forget Ninomiya.
“Satoshi! Get up! It’s nearly noon!”
Ohno’s eyelids were as heavy as lead when he heard his mother’s shrill voice. His entire body felt impossibly heavy; he didn’t want to move, just wanted to keep lying on the hard futon, lost in the warmth of the thin blanket he had pulled over his head.
“Satoshi! You have a visitor! Come on, get up!” is mother yelled, a lot more firmly now.
'A visitor?'
Ohno never had visitors.
Tiredly he sat up, rubbed the sleep from eyes that still didn’t want to open and nearly toppled over because he was too tired.
And then he heard the voice he had longed to hear for weeks, the voice whose soft tones he had thought he would never hear again.
“Good morning, Satoshi-kun.”
Ohno stared. His eyes had sprung open at once and widened in disbelief.
“Ninomiya-san…!”
His hand went to his sleep-tousled hair, trying to force the unruly strands into some semblance of order, but failing like he did every morning.
“What are you doing here?” he asked the newcomer, astonished.
Ninomiya smiled lightly, but he seemed somehow different again. His smile seemed almost nervous, shy even. How many different faces did this man have?
“Visiting you, I think.”
Another smile appeared on his lips and Ninomiya rubbed the hair at the back of his head in obvious nervousness.
The atmosphere surrounding them was strange, and Ohno needed a moment to realise that the customer he had been yearning for was really here, in his house. And that he was behaving differently.
“Ninomiya-san… are you feeling better?” he asked carefully, not sure how to deal with the situation. But the question brought up memories of their last meeting, of Nino’s anger. And of the fact that Ohno had just left, without saying goodbye.
“Hai… I’m fine…”
The young man turned and looked away from Ohno again. Everything was still very unusual.
The atmosphere became more oppressive with every second, nearly crushing.
“Listen… Satoshi-kun,” Ninomiya suddenly started timidly, slowly looking back up again. And at that moment Ohno realised the difference:
The man in front of him wasn’t the determined and self-confident Nino he had met at the club. The man in front of him was a totally different Ninomiya Kazunari. And Ohno was more than confused by this new side of his favourite customer.
“A few weeks ago, when you came to visit me… I… wanted to apologise again.”
Ohno could hear Nino swallow audibly after he spoke those words, he wasn’t looking directly at him, but at a point above his shoulder. He was evading his gaze.
“I… said things to you that weren’t ok. I’m sorry.”
The apology left the young man’s beautiful lips hesitantly, and to emphasise them he bowed lightly. Something Ohno had never seen Ninomiya do. A bow, a symbol of humility. A serious apology.
‘He… really means it…’
Ohno didn’t know what to think about his former customer’s gesture and words. He didn’t know anything anymore at that moment.
“Eh… You… I… one second! All of this is happening a little too fast for me, Ninomiya-san,” he said, confused, still staring at Ninomiya incredulously, while Nino straightened up again.
“You are… suddenly back. I need to realise that first! I mean… you didn’t try to get in contact with me at all after what happened and suddenly a month later you’re here and… and…”
Ohno didn’t know why he was saying these things, why he was blabbing his private thoughts, but he had the feeling that these things needed to be said.
“I was hoping to see you again so much… because… because I…”
He lowered his gaze slightly and felt traitorous warmth spread over his cheeks. But he had to finish his sentence now, had to get out what was weighing on his heart. The whole time he had hoped for a chance, a meeting. And now the time had finally come.
“Because I… wanted to apologise!”
Now it was his turn to bow.
“I was meddling and I had no right to! And I just left, without saying goodbye and that even though you were paying me! I’m so sorry, Ninomiya-san!”
Finally the words were out there, the apology passed Ohno’s lips quickly, having waited to spill out of him for a month now.
When Ohno straightened again, the first thing he saw was a small smile gracing Nino’s lips. A sweet, calming smile. As if the atmosphere had suddenly changed. Become pleasant.
“I’m here, because I wanted to apologise, Satoshi-kun…,” the customer finally said, his voice soft and, for reasons unknown, sounding incredibly relieved, not as tense and nervous as he had been just a moment before.
“What would you say… if… well… we get to know each other a little better…?”
At this point in time Ohno hadn’t known what Nino could have meant with that sentence.
But now, only a few days later, he slowly got the feeling he knew the direction of Nino’s thoughts.
And the realisation made Ohno’s heart beat faster and faster.
“I’m really happy to see you…,” Ninomiya’s voice was very close and warm, his breath caressing the host’s ear with every word. Nino pulled him closer still, tightened his grip on the smaller body. And Ohno leaned into the touch, enjoying the closeness, the warmth.
“Me, too…,” the host replied cautiously, shy but smiling. He was still having problems following Ninomiya’s movements, but he let his body be guided by the pleasantly calm music of the club more and more. The slow rhythm was very relaxing and the host didn’t feel as if he should pull off any fancy dance moves, he could just relax and let Ninomiya lead him. Dancing with a customer could be nice after all. Ohno had never thought it possible when he first became a host.
The melancholy music kept playing reassuringly, while the dance floor was plunged into twilight. It became harder to see, but Ohno didn’t notice anyone other than the customer in front of him anyway at that point. The customer who was very close in front of him.
Ohno slowly lowered his head to lie on the young man’s shoulder, breathed in Ninomiya’s pleasant smell and felt his arms tighten around his body. But the host didn’t mind at all, he wanted to be closer to him, keep feeling his touch.
A quiet sigh escaped Nino; he seemed to enjoy the moment as much as Ohno.
But slowly but surely the slow song was coming to an end and Ohno suddenly feared that a faster song would follow, a song whose rhythm didn’t allow them to keep dancing slowly, intimately. And then Ninomiya would surely let go of him, the atmosphere would be ruined and would burst like a bubble and everything would be like it had been before. Like it had been when Ninomiya had turned up at the club with Masaki, where they had sat down at a table with Sho and him. It wasn’t that Ohno hadn’t enjoyed it, but this moment was too precious, too special, to just end.
‘I don’t want it to end…’
But as if the music had heard his plea, when the next song came on it was another slow one. And Ohno felt Nino’s fingers move, felt them run up and down his back slowly, gently.
His heart beat faster and faster until it was racing in his chest.
Ohno slowly opened his eyes again; he hadn’t even noticed that he had shut him. He looked at Nino’s throat absent-mindedly, watched the soft-looking skin, and enjoyed the feel of Nino’s fingers on his back.
Ohno didn’t know what had come over him.
Maybe it was the atmosphere, the slow music, the twilight. But maybe it was the closeness they shared at that moment, the touches and the cosy warmth.
But he didn’t know what made him look up when Nino put his hand on his cheek, what made him not shy away when the customer closed the space between them.
He only knew that his heart nearly stopped when he felt Nino’s soft lips cover his own.
‘Nino-san…’
No, he couldn’t explain it. But he didn’t want to explain it; he just wanted to enjoy it.
And he did enjoy it.
Heat rose inside him the longer Nino’s lips rested on his, slowly their kiss became more demanding. Ohno had never before felt like this when kissing a man, his stomach seemed to do somersaults.
Nino’s lips kept moving against his mouth, opened slightly only to close around Ohno’s lower lip. There was so much softness, so much tenderness in this kiss, Ohno nearly forgot to return the intimate touch. He was on emotional overload; his body was bombarded with too many sensations, his mind clouded by too many feelings that left no place for thoughts besides thoughts of Ninomiya.
What was he doing to him…?
‘Nino-san… was this what you meant by getting to know you better?’ the host thought suddenly and the thought only made him feel more embarrassed.
A moment later Ninomiya’s lips parted from his. Ohno opened his eyes and looked straight into the young man’s glowing orbs.
And if time had not stood still already, it did it by now.
