I'm an American who is a fan of the "Captain Pronin" cartoon series. I was dismayed to see that the English translations of the first two shorts were taken down, especially since I'd commissioned a translator to translate the fourth short into English, and am preparing to put it online.
Do you know if the translations survive anywhere? Any help would be MUCH appreciated.
Well, I'm going to put them back online eventually. However, I'm reuploading things in roughly chronological order, so it might take some time because these films are from the 1990s, and I'm still in the 1960s.
At least a few more days, I think - by that time, I should have them up on Dailymotion at least (Youtube and DotSub take longer because some videos have to be broken up into parts, and DotSub also needs a Russian transcription)
You can get the original films here (download via torrents). Although their version doesn't have the anti-aliasing stuff I did to improve the image quality of the second film.
Excellent! Thank you very much. Are you at all interested in the translation of episode 4? It isn't quite as good as the first 3 episodes, but it's still fun, I think. I could email you the url if you wanted.
// Ilya suggests that this might have something to do with the fallout from the recent success of Russian animators in attracting Putin's attention to their problems (a story which I've entirely missed covering here - I'm very sorry). //
Any way, I see an odd coincidence in this case. I'd would not make any suppositions without the facts, but I guess that somebody has suddenly seen the light regarding Soviet animation as a profitable business. Obviously, after recent the animators' and Putin's meeting, some people want to turn things to own advantage.
"I guess that somebody has suddenly seen the light regarding Soviet animation as a profitable business"
Well, the Soyuzmultfilm Filmfund has been getting pretty rich from the licensing for years now. What's changed is that Putin seems to have supported getting rid of that organization, so maybe some new people are taking a look at things now. http://animator-online.ru/wordpress/?p=343
Rather funny how Soviet animation, which was made for reasons as far from "profitable business" as you can get, is now a "profitable business" for people who had nothing to do with the original organization.
Also, if your goals of being a "profitable business" lead you into direct conflict with the biggest fans of the artistic work that you're promoting... well, maybe you're not a very good steward.

One thing that could help... how are you at translating things from English to Russian? I'm much better at Russian to English than the opposite, so I'd really like it if you could translate into Russian the following paragraph from my entry; I think maybe this idea could be part of the "brain storm" on the Russian side:
I'd like to be able to show these films to others without getting harassed... and after all, the old model of television over antenna was that the channels were free to watch, and you "paid" by watching advertisements. I don't see why such a system couldn't be replicated with internet video... content creators allow anyone to share their content, while they get to choose the ad content that plays before it. In this way, they get money, and they get their audience to do the distribution for them, make translations into other languages, and so on. Basically, they don't have to do anything except rake in the cash, so this proposal would seem to be an attractive one for them. Otherwise this cat and mouse game will never

I was cleaning my channel, then, i realized that all my animation from Russian animator was vanished ....what a shame ... those animation were my fav. How can i get in touch with you ? Is it possible to get those animation elsewhere ? Thanx for the help Franck/ pewploid youtube channel
Well, you are "in touch" with me right now, technically. ;) You could also send me a private message through my Youtube account (which is still there) or through LiveJournal.
As I said, the animations are being reuploaded in a few different places, to provide mirrors in case one location goes down. The most complete location at the moment is here. Other places are here, here and here. I'm focusing on getting everything back up in at least one location as quickly as possible, then the others will follow. I chose DailyMotion for that "main" location because it's the easiest, even though the video quality is generally not as nice.
I just want to thank you and the translators for your work, you certainly made a difference and hopefully will continue to do so despite these problems. See you on dailymotion then!
