Is that standard practice in other places too? Did you ask them why? It was nice seeing you today! :) It made my worthless trip to Bar Ilan somewhat meaningful.

I don't know what the practices are in other hospitals...

I totally hear you. I'd be scared, too- I think it's a normal feeling. But you know that there will be so many people looking after you to make sure that everything is okay. Are you going natural or epidural or something else?

you are right that you will warm the baby by holding him/her. You can tell the nurses that you are doing skin to skin with the baby and it doesn't need warming. You can refuse to have it taken away. It is best that the baby stays with you!

I'm not sure they'll let me refuse. We'll see how I'm feeling/how assertive I'm feeling/what the midwives and nurses are like, etc.
I guess it's just something I'll have to figure out when I'm there.

That's such a bad policy for a hospital to have.

At Mt. Sinai, the nurses encourage immediate skin-to-skin. If the baby needs a warmer - it's inside the room. In normal situations, Mum & Babe are never separated.

From my recent experience, labour and delivery is not exactly fun (though it's manageable with the right attitude and/or drugs), but having a baby is the most amazingly wonderful thing in the entire world.

So, would you be willing to elaborate - like, how was your labor? What was your pain management plan of action? Was it scary, or just intense, or what? It's good to get this from someone who's given birth recently...

May I ask why you had pitocin?

Six hours? It felt like Chaya was away for me for a long time but I can't imagine it was that long! Plus she had low blood sugar.

Yeah, so what can I do?
If I let them take away the baby at all, it could be for up to 6 hours. Can I refuse completely? I do want a doctor to do a check up, but if I refuse I can so see them telling me I'd be forgoing that.

You could ask Jonathan (ahead of time) to stay with the baby and try to hound them into giving him/her back to you as soon as possible. Don't know if they'll let him, though.

Well, they said dads could hang out with the babies the whole time, but the mom has to rest, or something. And then wait, wait, wait. I figure if I can sleep it'll be nice, but I doubt I'll be able to sleep for any amount of time straight.
