So, pretty much noone has said anything about Katrina and/or the aftermath, with the exception of Corey. Sort of like how noone said anything about the tsunami in December. Way to care, folks

Most of what I see is momentary caring - and then people go on with their lives. I'm one of those. It's hard to feel sympathy for what you can only see on TV...
I agree with you that 1) the human race would be improved if everyone had to go through something like this (although you've got to consider: if everyone did go through something like this, then there would have to cataclysmic storms every week or so), and 2) people need to be grateful that gas prices are their only concern.
PS. I'm just waiting for some asshole like Pat Robertson to tell us that Katrina is God's punishment for enabling homosexuals or believing in evolution or something.
I've really been meaning to make a big Katrina post sometime, posting what I've seen, probably some things people should know, GOES satellite photos before it hit land (some of the last usable visibles Sunday night), new low-altitude high-res photos of the damage (some are available on Google Earth, others can be found here), and so on.
But every time I open up a blank entry, there are no words. There's just no real way to sufficiently describe this at all. Even around-the-clock (at least, on CNN) news coverage can't capture 10% of it all.
I don't think people write about it or express their feelings, because it can all be portrayed as insensitive. It's a really touchy subject that none of us can even begin to imagine because the closest to it we are is CNN...and, it's almost guaranteed that few people will do anything baout it either. In my US Lit class a drive is being made as a competition between classes, and the only way to get people to participate is to offer a pizza party..
Give money, give food, give clothes. volunteer at at the red cross, walk to school to save gas for the rescue efforts, join the national guard and go down there, organize a church relief effort to go down there. encourage everyone you know to do the same. there's all kinds of stuff you can do, and i'm pretty sure bitching about how every one else doesn't care isn't one of them.
touche, i knew someone'd take this approach which is totally understandable; I sound like an elitist commie douchebag. But, uh, props for being the first to call me out.
P.S: I really would like to get some more info on the martial law of crabs
