Amita turned her phone on as the last of her students left the classroom. She and Charlie had arranged to teach the class together, but he hadn’t shown up. Fortunately she knew her fiancé well and had been prepared to handle the class by herself.
Her phone chirped to let her know she had voicemail. Probably Charlie telling her he’d gotten caught up in some case for Don. She accessed her voicemail and stood, foot tapping impatiently, waiting to hear his excuse.
“Amita, it’s Don. Charlie’s been hurt. They took him to Huntington Hospital…”
She grabbed her bag and ran.
