Several months before a Sri Lankan wedding, somebody concocts massive quantities of something called Rich Cake. This is a diabolical concoction of dried fruit, ginger, eggs, semolina, sugar and brandy. It is baked, rested for a month, soaked in brandy, and baked again. Silk
Does anyone know anything about the ethics/environmental impact of silk? I think most of the time I do OK as regards my use of animal products; I avoid flesh food fairly strictly, for a start. Most of the eggs I eat are from hens I know, and most of the milk I drink is organic. I am fairly unrestrained with cheese, admittedly, and I take fish oil ( Read more... ) -

Yesterday I went with Nilmini and her mother for our second sari fitting. I stood to be pinned and measured, while three small of stature and formidable of temperament Sri Lankan women talked around me, flipping effortlessly between Sinhala and English. Alison! The boys are killing the babies in home corner!!!And indeed they were, stabbing the baby dolls with plastic kitchen knives, and sticking them in the freezer compartment of the fridge. I rushed in and treated the abused dollies for blood loss and hypothermia, teaching my little criminals how to wrap them, and hold them against their bodies ( Read more... ) -

I ran home tonight in order to be here for Levi's birthday (he turns seven tomorrow) I'll be off again in a day or two. I saw the old year out at the dullest party ever... but ran away in time to see the new year in with people genuinely dear to my heart.

Does anyone out there have (or know someone who has) an oldish Mac Laptop that they would like to sell? I realise my chances are slim, but if I could get my hands on one my life would be inexpressibly easier. -
Bus Conversation
I had a conversation on the bus with a Christian bloke today. He seemed a nice enough person, for someone who was the pastor of a group that talks in tongues; and considers drinking orange juice as a form of going against God's will... after all, God made the whole orange and intended for it to be eaten that way ( Read more... ) -
