Preheating means you heat the thingy before ("pre") cooking. So you make it all le hot and THEN you put the quesadilla in the quesadilla maker. Or rather the tortillas-and-cheese.
Where DID your spatula go? Maybe it ran away because it was mad that you didn't know it was called a spatula until we told you?

Ah, so that is pre heating! Like prehistoric. And I will find my spatula and inform it that I am the master and it is my subject. I usually want to eat the bananas just like that, but I'll give that a shot!

And yes - preheating is a good thing.
You say "a lot of cheese leaked out the sides..." but...that's hardly a lot of cheese - comparitively.
