I never use cdrecord on the command line. I have always used X CD Roast -- it's pretty easy and comes with a gui. Perhaps that would help.
Yahoo mail is blocking almost all mail from lj-notify
I have never figured out to deal with this. I have the same problem with my primary email address -- yahoo blocks us by default. So, unless someone has specifically noticed me in their junk mail box, they never get my messages. It's full of lame. *shakes fist at Yahoo*
cdrecord doesn't give any errors or warnings? I use cdrecord like that (I don't use -data flag, but that shouldn't affect anything), and it works for me if the driver is behaving. Sometimes there are gotchas between linux and the firmware of the drives, since all cdr drives are not created equal. If you haven't already, you might google for the model number of your drive and see if anyone else reports problems and workarounds.
As for Yahoo mail, at least at one time they claimed your address list acts as a whitelist, but I also recall it didn't work for me as advertised. Dunno if that helps.
For one thing, Yahoo's beta mail program comes really close to matching Thunderbird feature-for-feature. I really like Thunderbird, and having something like a free Thunderbird I can access from a browser is great.
For another, I got to Yahoo so early that I beat every other "Sam Jones" in the world. With GMail, I don't have that. I've used a "samjones" email address for several years, so I like keeping that.
Ah then perhaps yahoo's user interface is better than it used to be. In the past it seemed pretty lame to me; I haven't looked lately. More generally I simply trust google's competence and honesty more than yahoo's. :)
