Drove the bimmer down to see Becca today in Battle Creek/Kalamazoo. We bummed around the mall (lame except that I got a couple of shirts on sale at JC Penney’s), then headed for the Kalamazoo Nature Center

The Bimmer will definitely be different during the winter, but it shouldn't be unmanageable. What you have to try and remember is that it's rear wheel drive, and thus will tend to oversteer instead of understeer when you lose traction. So instead of sliding forward when you're trying to turn, you'll turn into a giant silver frisbee. :)
Countersteer gently if you start to spin, and go easy on the gas. It's really heavy, so should keep traction decently with good snow tires.
Loooong ago I had a rear wheel drive car, loved the fun in the snow, actually. Not great on the highway, but when I need to highway travel I'll borrow kamenkyote's Saturn. ;) Having lived in Michigan all my life, I'm no stranger to exactly how and how not to turn into a frisbee. Good advice, though!
I'm planning to get some good snow tires in the fall, too, so that'll definitely help. I did some reading on Tirerack.com, which was nice because some people in MI with my car (or things like corvettes!) were reporting excellent performance from certain tires that aren't too hideously priced. I think I should be fine.
There were only 3 or 4 days all winter when I was worried about snow driving. The rest of the time, it was me going out when I shouldn't have because of the FWD car. ;D
There's nothing lame about getting an almost-steal on shirts that I'll wear to work and get pissed on. ;D I don't buy there because I LIKE it, but because it's economical. :D
