"It's a quarter after one, I'm all alone
And I need you now
Said I wouldn't call, but I'm a little drink
And I need you now"

~ Need You Now / Lady Antebellum

His phone buzzed and he sighed. He didn’t need to check it to know who it was but he did anyway. Turning over in bed-since when was it so goddamned wide anyway?-he grabbed his phone off the night stand and flicked it open.

“Goodnight, have a great day tomorrow ☺”

Going back to the message inbox, he groaned at the list of messages from her for the past days, all reading something along the lines of “Goodnight.” “How was your day?”

The clock read 1.37am. But she was obviously awake.

He draped his arm over his eyes as he dialed her number.

“H-Hello?”

“You have to stop doing this to yourself.”

“Doing what? I thought we agreed on being friends.”

“…This isn’t what friends do.”

“You used to send me those.”

“That was different.”

“Hikaru-“

“Reika, stop.”

“I’m not doing anything!”

Her voice hitched at the end of her sentence, and he pinched his nose bridge.

“You know better.”

“So what if I don’t?” she hiccupped. “I miss you.”

“We’ve had this discussion before. I’m not…” He struggled to find the word. “I’m not right for you. I can’t give you what you want.”

“But you always have.”

“I’m not good for you. Find someone else.”

“I don’t want to.”

He listened to her quiet sobbing for a few moments while his heart raged war against his sensibilities.

“You should. I’m telling right out that you should. Go be happy-“

“I was happy with you.”

“Well I can’t… I don’t think I can keep that up. I’m sorry. Goodnight. I have an early shoot tomor-today.”

“Goodnight-“

It dawned on him why his bed suddenly felt so much wider.

“Your next appointment is at 4pm, a shoot for Nylon Japan, then at 8pm there’s the live broadcast for Music Station…”

His manager’s voice disappeared as he caught sight of a familiar silhouette on the sidewalk. Walking with someone else. Walking with a… guy. His insides churned as the car passed them.

“Yaotome?”

“Sorry-what?”

The tinted windows hid the fact that he had his nose pressed up against the glass to take a better look at the pair. They were dressed smartly in office clothes and they were laughing. Then she hit the other guy casually on the arm.

“Yaotome, listen, this is important.”

“I’m listening!”

It was only later that Hikaru realized that he had his fist clenched for the rest of the journey to the photography studio.

“Hey, so um, hi.”

“Hi! How are you?”

He nearly dropped his phone at her unexpectedly cheery response. This is bad.

“I uh, passed you in the car today, actually.”

“Oh-“ her voice faltered. “Oh, where?”

“Around Roppongi, mid afternoon. You were walking with someone…?”

“Oh, that would have been my senpai at work. We um, we were running errands together.”

“Is that so,” he nodded to himself. “Well you looked like you were having fun.”

“We’re…” she took a breath. “We’re kinda…”

“Together?”

“No-Not quite, we’ve been going out for 2 weeks.”

“That’s nice.”

“He’s pretty alright,” she chuckled. “Do you approve?”

“I… I guess? He’s um, pretty tall.”

“Nearly 180cm.”

“So what do you like about him?”

“You sound like one of my girl friends, Hikaru," she laughed.

“I’m allowed to ask, aren’t I? So? Is he completely different from me? Apart from being tall.”

She chuckled quietly.

“Come on, tell me! He was pretty handsome. So you like the tall, manly type now?”

“He’s… He reminded me the most of you, actually. That’s why I said yes.”

He nearly dropped his phone for the second time in minutes.

“What?”

“He’s funny, he’s a bit of a workaholic… Surprisingly in love with our job. He tends to forget to take it easy sometimes but other than that-“

“You… You sound like you really like him.”

“…I don’t know. It’s too soon to say anything.”

“Is he more handsome than I am?”

She burst out laughing.

“Honestly? Yes.”

“Damn. I’m glad you’re happy.”

“That’s what you wanted, right?”

Not exactly. Her happiness came at too high a cost to his own well-being.

“…Are you free now? I haven’t seen you in a while. Do you want to get coffee?”

“Now?”

“It’s a Friday.”

“It’s 11pm, Hikaru.”

“…I have a coffee machine?”

He was well aware that he wasn’t playing fair at all, as he backed her into the living room wall and claimed her lips-reminding her that she had once talked about him like she talked about her senpai, reminding her that she had once melted at the feel of his lips on hers. That once he had been the only guy she could ever see.

It sucked to know that despite being able to keep the hearts of 500000 other girls for years, he couldn’t keep hers for more than months after they broke up. He somehow convinced himself that what he was doing now-tracing her jawline with the tip of his nose and hitching her cotton dress up-was completely a matter of pride. It had nothing to do with the fact that he wanted her back so bad it hurt.

“S-Stop, I can’t-ah-“

He smirked. Still as responsive as ever. Still his. He captured her lips again and this time her fingers found their way into his hair. He sighed into the kiss as her fingers grazed his nape.

“Mine,” he nipped her lower lip. “I’m sorry I ever let you go. I'm keeping you for good.”

“Hikaru, t-this isn’t-“

“I’m not gonna let-“ he cupped her face between his hands and leaned their foreheads together. She grabbed a fistful of his t-shirt to steady herself as they caught their breaths. “-anyone else have you. If they can make you happy so can I. And I’ll do ten thousand times better than any other guy you find out there.”

“Hikaru I’m with someone else now-“

“You said it yourself that he’s a replacement.”

“...But-”

He chuckled and went back to dizzying her with all his old tricks. Battle won.

“Ne.”

“Hmm?” He mumbled against her forehead and drew a finger down her spine. His shin was almost immediately met with a sharp kick after she squirmed away from the teasing touch.

“Where are we going with this?”

“Where are we going with what?”

“…nothing.”

“Are you happy? Here? Now?”

Her sigh tickles his chest.

“Yeah.”

He hugged her closer.

“Me too.”
