Re: On Deck thedicearecast June 19 2011, 04:44:40 UTC
[She had to be dreaming. Had to be, except for the distinct sense of waking up that started Amelia's adventure into--wherever she was. Down in the dark had been bad enough; on some cot, surrounded by strangers, with the entire place wobbling worse than any Sand Steamer she'd ever been on. But then she'd gone up, out into the sunlight--

And saw something she couldn't begin to describe.

Water. More than she'd ever seen in her life, stretching out into the horizon and beyond. Enough for a whole city, or maybe the whole planet, just there, right in front of her. It couldn't be real.]

What in the world is going on?

Maybe. Guess I'll have to remember that there are desperate women with pathetic pick-up lines too.

[Amelia turned away at that. Whatever was going on, the water was vast enough that Amelia could stare at it somewhere else.]

[oooh, you're fun. She's totally following you.]

Really? But I thought it was rather creative!

[Of course she followed. Amelia always attracted the stubborn idiots.]

Then your imagination is bad too.

[chuckles] So what would a good pick up line be?

There's no such thing.

[Amelia's tempted to lean against the railing, just to look out again, but that would mean trapping herself with this woman still following her. Still, she couldn't ignore the water completely, so she stopped in as open of an area as she could find with the growing number of people around.]

Don't you have something better to do than following me? [Because Amelia certainly did.]

Not at all. Your alluring grouchiness draws me like a moth to flame.

[Not that she's just waiting for a boat to get to shore or anything. Nope.]

Then don't cry when you get burned.

[Because if this woman crossed the line, Amelia would fight back. She was no stranger to violence, and even on this listing platform, she knew she could hold her own.]

Is that worry I'm imagining in your voice? How sweet!

[There's nothing Amelia can even say to that, because the woman herself has already pointed out--she's imagining anything resembling concern.]

It's a warning. Don't take it as anything else.

Next thing I know, you'll be writing love letters to me.

[chuckles, and she leans on a rail to stare out into the ocean.] It's beautiful, isn't it?

[she turns and you get a small smile that's part tease and part pride. She saw that look on your face before she started harassing you.]

[Wow lady. Wow. Amelia cringes at that little statement.] You're either even more desperate than I thought, or a flat out idiot.

[But the woman moves to the rail, and Amelia looks past her into that expanse of water again. She's finally said something Amelia can agree with.]

I've never seen anything like it.

[eyes widen, and now she's actually being serious :\]

Never? Are you from one the land-locked countries?

thedicearecast June 19 2011, 20:22:14 UTC
You could say that.

[If the woman's going to be serious, then Amelia can to. Better than the flirting by a long shot.]

I'm from a desert. There's hardly any water at all there, on the entire planet.

[shudders] Sounds like a horrible place.

It can be, sometimes. But it's all we've got, so people have to make the best of it.
