The Dad I remember from long ago poked his head out and said "Hi" today...

I got an email before leaving work with the subject "A little something..."

Attached was the poem eulogy I wrote for our first guinea pigs when I was 14. I buried them under my favorite crab apple tree in the backyard. That was the prettiest damn tree...

your eulogy and story surrounding it made me cry. *sniffle*

Regarding writing: Reading anything I wrote before college (and even then, some stuff during or after college...) makes me gag. Honest to God, literally gag. Trust me -- I, too, was an emo angsty teen who wrote some stuff that should never again be seen by eyes.

The gems in my old crap are not found in the actual writing itself but in the ideas and themes and characters and story-line (I wouldn't go so far as to actually call it "plot") and, if something there is worth salvaging, I try to salvage it (The Jester of Kamear is a good example of me fixing up something gross ( ... )

So, if you feel like you should give writing a chance, go ahead and give it a chance. If you regret giving it up because you think you'll never "measure up" to other people, here's a secret -- I don't feel like I'm ever going to measure up to anybody either. I'm always in awe of people who write and wish I could be as great at it as they are. If you always compare yourself to others in anything, you'll always come up short [from the collected works of adages stolen by me -- here's another one: you can't please everyone, so you've got to please yourself]. Actually, though, this "coming up short" advice comes mostly from grad school. It's awful how people who are genuinely good at mathematics feel like they aren't because they are surrounded by others who are also good. If I sit and compare myself with everybody else here, I'm definitely going to feel shitty about my own ability (or think "lack thereof"), and after I realized this first semester last year, I tried giving up on the comparing and just doing my own thing.
