Fic: Five ways Special Projects Almost Wasn't (3/5)

Feb 10, 2008 01:24

This is a challenge fic written for
sanadafaye.  She  who made this awesome banner.

In exchange for the wonderful banner, I offered to write her fic.  So she asked for a five-times story.  The challenge was to write five ways in which one little change would have affected the special projects universe.  In each of these stories, one minor thing happened, and sent our characters down a different path than the one they're currently walking.

Warning: These are not the characters you know.  Because of one minor change, they walk a different path.

3. Someone else chased the story.

“So what does this have to do with us?”

“You guys are hunters, right?” Lois said. “You help people? I'd like to know more about what you do. See if there's a story there.”

Sam shook his head. Something about Lois Lane didn't feel right. Yeah, Dean and Sam wanted to know about metahumans. Particularly since Sam was one, and right now they knew zero. And yeah, she'd covered metahumans, but most of those clips dealt with Superman. With the FBI on their case, he and Dean were all about being low key. The last thing they needed was to draw attention to themselves with a high-profile story.

“What we do? It's not that complicated, darlin',” Dean said. “We find some seriously evil sons of bitches, and we put 'em down.”

Dean flashed her his killer smile, but Sam could tell that his heart wasn't in it. For one thing, she was married. And while Dean normally liked pushy types - she was just a bit too much like Cassie. Sam didn't think that his big brother had ever gotten over the rejection that the other reporter had dished out to him.

“Look,” Lois said impatiently. “You've seen my clips. I've got a friggin' Pulitzer Prize for crying out loud! And I can handle myself. My dad is a three-star army general. I've had weapons and hand-to-hand combat training under green berets, and I'm a black belt in Judo.”

And that was another strike against her. John Winchester had been a U.S. Marine. And both Sam and Dean knew what he used to say about the Army.

You know what Army stands for boys? Ain't Ready for the Marines Yet.

Judging by Dean's snort, he was remembering the same thing.

“Lois, excuse us for a minute.” He pulled Dean down the bar to talk in private.

“Dude, she’s definitely not coming with us.” Dean craned his neck to look at her over Sam's shoulder. His lips turned down in a frown.

Sam nodded at his brother. “Agreed.”
