Opinions Needed: Book De-Cluttering

I recently read Marie Kondo's The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up. I've been searching for a while for a way to improve my habitat, so that my space is relaxing, joyful and pleasant. Kondo seems to get exactly that concept, and her position on organizing is forget finding new and more elaborate ways to store--radically pare down what you have, so ( Read more... )

Good grief. Is it the weather? I've started decluttering too, but figure VHS tapes are the easiest to purge first. My precious books, not so much. Magazines, the same. Heck, I was going through one box and found a National Enquirer with John Barrowman (Torchwood) dating Cher. What a hoot! Sometimes there are gems, and I finally found my "YOu can survive a nuclear blast" pamphlet my parents were given by the welcome wagon back in the 50s.

I'll have to check out that book you mentioned.

Yes! I have caught the decluttering flu! (So much better than the real thing) Unfortunately I purged almost all my VHS last time I had a bout of it, so a lot of my easiest categories of stuff are done. D:

As for the coffee table ones, have you tried looking up ways to display them on pinterest or home decor sites? There are a lot of nifty ideas out there, and you might find something that makes you happier to keep them?

No, I haven't. I'll give that a try, thanks!

I am so not the person to help you with throwing away books. My solution has always been to get more bookshelves. I'm good at getting rid of other stuff, but not books.

I am terrible at throwing away books (I still have textbooks from many years ago packed away under my bed, and literally every single one of my teenage self's books are still on the shelves at my parents's place) so uh, this is me cheering you on but having no useful advice whatsoever. :D

Mainstream popular novels [...] Keeping these are like keeping wrappers from my candy bars

... this is a really good way of putting it, huh! I never thought about it this way, but that's true. If you're never going to reread them and you can get another quite easily, then who cares?

And yet still appreciated! It's hard, even after I've decided to get rid of something, to actually do it (today I patted myself on the back because I actually moved the legal journals from their stack near the door to the actual outside trash bin!).
