Fanboy thought experiment

I started playing Final Fantasy VI again, and on a whim I started naming the characters after Joss Whedon characters. Then I realized that by naming them on an ad hoc basis I was getting the mapping all wrong, so I started over and decided to come up with the names in advance. These are my choices; what would you choose?

Setzer bores me, and I like Mal, so I don't think I'd have gone that way, but I think your correlation is good.

Locke = Simon.

This threw me off because I always rename my characters, thus making it hard for me to remember what they were originally named, and I independently renamed Locke as Simon in the only game I ever played, so it took me a minute to realize that wasn't his "real" (default) name.

I'll have to think about this all some more.

I tend to agree with you about Setzer. I think the only time I've ever used him extensively was when I did the CES challenge (i.e., play through the entire World of Ruin without picking up any characters other than Celes, Edgar, and Setzer, since they're the only three characters necessary to finish the game).

His stats are blah, he's never really a good fighter until you get the Fixed Dice in Kefka's Tower, his Slots are too random to be useful (although supposedly some people have mastered them, and I hear it's possible to cheat at them by pausing the game), and his GP Rain just seems like a waste of gold (I'm a hoarder). On top of that, he's too isolated from the other characters to have any real depth.

Gotta name him something, though. :-)

Okay, having given this more thought, my choices would be:

Celes=Tara. Tara had her head messed with too (by Glory), she's blonde, and she sings well. Plus, Celes is sort of balanced despite her past while River is really ... odd, so that correlation doesn't ring for me.

Locke=Xander. Locke always wants to protect the people around him, and so does Xander, though he's hampered by the fact that most of them are stronger than he is. Xander also does some treasure hunting of his own in times when he is using his ex-military knowledge.

Cyan=Gunn. He lost somebody close to him to the bad guys, and he has kind of a lone-wolf sort of personality. I could see Gunn getting to be handy with a sword.
