IUP wasn't liberal. It couldn't have been. A&M and the surrounding area are just really really conservative. Like, radically, painfully conservative. And the rest of the world is more like the Indiana area. And there are pockets of glorious wonderful liberalism, where sex is okay and people are allowed to be different ( Read more... )

thank you! I feel better. I consider IUP to be fairly conservative, but A&M makes them look a liberal paradise. I knew it was conservative, but not -this- conservative. holy crap. (i.e. we got a horrible Southern Style sideways lecture by the priest about how we shouldn't live together, implying that we might not be able to get married in the Church if we didn't move out, and I finally snapped)

Well, yes. But I guess I've been spoiled by fairly liberal churches. Obviously the UU is very liberal, but even the IUP priest was more open to change in the church, and while he may have towed the party line he certainly didn't try to shame you if you acted outside of that. I wasn't expecting it to put me on the defensive as much as it did--it certainly didn't feel like it was an open discussion, more like I was apt to be judged.
