I'm really frustrated with my brain meds. The prozac, despite past successes isn't working well. Probably too similar to the Paxil, which worked for 7 years, then petered out ( Read more... )

I just went from Prozac to Lexapro, and I've been having pretty good luck so far. I hope it works for you too!

Everyone's brain chemistry is different, some people respond better to low doses of SSRIs than high ones. Its called a biphasic dose response. A lot of drugs are like that- THC for example, anxyolytic for most at low doses, can be anxiogenic at high doses. Good luck with your new med, sadly SSRIs to absolutely jack shit for me. Dopamine and/or the other monoamine neurotransmitters seem to be what I'm lacking. The best thing I've found so far is a herbal prep called rhodiola rosea. I've been on it about 6 or 7 months now and it's still effective. Its main active ingredients are a class of chemicals called rosavins (decent rhodiola should be standardised at 3%) which individually act as very weak MAOI A and B inhibitors. Together they give a larger total effect than would be expected from their individual strengths, without the side effects you'd get from a conventional MAOI. I had mild headaches the first 3 days I was on it, which reoccur if I stop taking it abruptly for 2-3 days. It's also cheap.
