Twice recently I have heard people refer to a slide as a "sliding board" - I had never heard it before, but then again, there was a huge gap in my discussions about slides and playgrounds between ages 12 and 35 ( Read more... )

bubblah :-), though if I want anyone here in TX to understand me, I say "water fountain."

jimmies, but ditto re: TX and sprinkles (I once had a NYC ice cream employee tell me "jimmies" was racist). Um...what?

Soda, though I hear "coke" and "soda water" here.

I was raised in MA.

Question: INsurance or inSURance? EEquator or eQUAYtor? loy-er or law-yer

Same for me!

Real-tor, Re-al-tor, or (shudder) real-a-tor?

(btw I live in Southern Delaware - a tiny state with big differences in dialects between N and S - but I was raised in New York State.)

Real-tor. A year and a half managing two different real estate offices seared that one into my brain.

Water fountain, sprinkles, slide, hose, and pop. The last one outs me as a Chicagoan.

Slide, water fountain, sprinkles (jimmies confused me in books forEVER), hose (though I understand garden hose or hose pipe), pop (Canadian). For me the median goes in between two lanes and the bit of grass between the curb and the sidewalk is the boulevard. I had never before today heard the terms devil strip or treelawn.

Slide is shorthand for sliding board.
Northeast.

So do you say slide or sliding board? I've seriously never heard sliding board until very recently!

NE = PA by any chance?

OMG! You just made me realize that that's totally it! If I didn't shorten to slide, I guess I would say sliding board. Huh! (NE too)

Remember on FB there was that link and we were all going to do a video post of ourselves reading things? I think I was mainly responsible for the conversation in the first place, but I lost the link. I bet @pomegranate knows.
