Southern Customs
When we were on our tour of the county on Saturday we jaunted across the river for lunch. As we were entering the restraunt, I was kind of surprised when the county historian practically jumped to hold the door open. Southern Culture
The best stories are told by locals who have lived in a small town their entire lives, and who know the history through and through. A couple of us got the 50 cent tour yesterday from a guy who works for the newspaper. The cemetery was fascinating. The Land of Iniquity
The Land of Iniquity is known through out the rest of the US as "Louisiana." Everything that is fun, but apparently naughty, is done in Louisiana. Want liquor? Better go to Louisiana. Gambling? Louisiana. The river-boat casino may be tied up to this side of the river, but it still gets blamed on them somehow. It's apprently the "Easy State." ( Read more... ) -
The Courts
I finished my first box of Law documents from the 1840's today. For the most part they were debt cases stemming from the 1837 Crash and the resultant bank closures. However, about 20 of the folders contained extremely detailed dealings of a bank-fraud case involving four guys writting what were basically checks, from a bank which had ceased to ( Read more... ) -
Small Towns
The other evening I was on the phone with Alex, and as I meandered through Downtown Natchez I wandered past the jail. I saw several people in what looked like old fashioned jail costumes, the kind with black and white stripes, sitting outside having a smoke with people in police uniforms. Keys
If you meander down a particular tree lined drive in campus you pass a number of what look like older town-houses. Their dark sandstone walls actually hide several office buildings and service buildings for the campus. Behind one of these heavy wooden doors lies Keys.
