A word of warning about Of Human Bondange, or about Somerset Maugham in general. He writes exactly like what he is, a pinched little faggot, self-consciously attempting to create "important literature" while possesing no insight into humanity's better angels, or worse angels, or middle-of-the-road angels. His subject matter: enlightenment, Gauguin, sexual obsession, so much flatulence through a distended rectum. What percentage of these novels is spent describing the character's clothing? He's constantly experiencing some peevish revulsion at a shabby or unfashionable character, while completely failing to feel any revulsion at the incredible shallowness of the rest of his vapid cast, or at that of the horrible narrator himself. In his later years, and he lived ridiculously long, he became ever more concerned about his status in the world of letters. He was also known to shit in the corner of the drawing room, only to be caught desperately trying to clean it up with his hands. He was subject to childish and hysterical outbursts. While ( ... )

"in the four decades since his death, Maugham has lasted better than most of his contemporary rivals -- the likes of John Galsworthy, H.G. Wells and Arnold Bennett -- and his books have sold more than 40 million copies. Maugham is still read for his crack storytelling, shrewd characterization, fluid style and the exotic flavor of his books on spies and the Far East. His work seldom fails to give civilized pleasure; his name is a trademark for brainy entertainment. Isn't that enough?"

see? This guy on Amazon.com said that. There's some evidence. Hey Ali? How's the philosophy club going?

I haven't been to Philosophy Club in a long time. I'm not really all that interested in it anymore because I think most of the people wanted to use it to spout off their own philosophies and to tear others' down. I just wanted a place where we could talk about philosophers and really learn something. If some people had taken the time to examine what they thought and what other people were saying they'd see some parallels and wouldn't have been screaming at each other. I don't think anyone grew or learned or really thought so I'm pretty disappointed all around.
