TAPPER: But I guess the question from the Anti-Defamation League is, even if you don't know about their endorsement, there are these groups and individuals endorsing you. Would you just say unequivocally you condemn them and you don't want their support?
TRUMP: Well, I have to look at the group. I mean, I don't know what group you're talking about.
You wouldn't want me to condemn a group that I know nothing about. I would have to look. If you would send me a list of the groups, I will do research on them. And, certainly, I would disavow if I thought there was something wrong.
TAPPER: The Ku Klux Klan?
TRUMP: But you may have groups in there that are totally fine, and it would be very unfair. So, give me a list of the groups, and I will let you know.
TAPPER: OK. I mean, I'm just talking about David Duke and the Ku Klux Klan here, but...
TRUMP: I don't know any -- honestly, I don't know David Duke. I don't believe I have ever met him. I'm pretty sure I didn't meet him. And I just don't know anything about him.

According to one journalist’s tally, the New York Times has run 192 stories on the subject since the debate, including 50 editorials and 142 news stories. The Washington Post, which has also gone for saturation coverage, published a resignation speech they wrote for him. Not to be outdone, the New Yorker’s editor-in-chief declared that Biden not going away “would be an act not only of self-delusion but of national endangerment” and had a staff writer suggest that Democrats should use the never-before-deployed 25th amendment.
Since this would have to be led by Vice-President Kamala Harris, it would be a sort of insider coup. And so it goes with what appears to be a journalistic competition to outdo each other in the aggressiveness of the attacks and the unreality of the proposals. It’s a dogpile and a panic, and there is no one more unable to understand their own emotional life, biases, and motives than people who are utterly convinced of their own ironclad rationality and objectivity, AKA most of these pundits.
Speaking of coups, we’ve had a couple of late, which perhaps merit attention as we consider who is unfit to hold office. This time around, Trump is not just a celebrity with a lot of sexual assault allegations, bankruptcies, and loopily malicious statements, as he was in 2016. He’s a convicted criminal who orchestrated a coup attempt to steal an election both through backroom corruption and public lies and through a violent attack on Congress. The extremist US supreme court justices he selected during his last presidential term have themselves staged a coup this very Monday, overthrowing the US constitution itself and the principle that no one is above the law to make presidents into kings, just after legalizing bribery of officials, and dismantling the regulatory state by throwing out the Chevron deference.
His own former staffers are part of the Heritage Foundation’s team planning to implement Project 25 if Trump wins, which would finish off our system of government with yet another coup. “We are in the process of the second American Revolution, which will remain bloodless if the left allows it to be,” said the foundation’s president the other day. This alarms me. So does the behavior of the US mainstream media, which seems more concerned with sabotaging the only thing standing between us and this third coup.
“Why aren’t we talking about Trump’s fascism?” demands the headline of Jeet Heer’s piece in the Nation, to which the answer might be a piece by the Nation’s own editor-in-chief titled “Biden’s patriotic duty” that proposes his duty is to get lost. Sometimes I wonder if all this coverage is because the media know how to cover a normal problem like a sub-par candidate; they don’t know how to cover something as abnormal and unprecedented as the end of the Republic. So for the most part they don’t.

В 2020 у республиканцев платформы не было вообще. Воспользовавшись сумятицей во время пандемии, они ограничились декларацией "Мы за Трампа".



Главное внимание в платформе уделяется разжиганию ненависти к иммигрантам. В прошлые годы разговор о необходимости охраны границы в республиканских платформах начинался с признания вклада иммигрантов в страну.

В новой платформе нет ни подобной связности текста, ни подобных признаний. Слово "invasion" употребляется 6 раз, "aliens" - тоже 6 раз, "illegal" (по отношению к иммигрантам, а не к преступлениям номинанта) - 14 раз.



Новая платформа, однако, пытается обходить стороной малопопулярные вопросы.

Платформа 2016 года жаловалась на решение Верховного суда Obergefell v. Hodges о легализации однополых браков.

Новая платформа этот вопрос обходит, даже намеком. "Republicans will promote a Culture that values the Sanctity of Marriage" слишком толсто.

Четырнадцатая поправка упоминается - с намеком, что ее можно креативно использовать для того, чтобы объявить зародыши людьми и приравнять аборты к убийствам: "We proudly stand for families and Life. We believe that the 14th Amendment to the Constitution of the United States guarantees that no person can be denied Life or Liberty without Due Process." Но это тоже намек, напрямую про аборты не говорится по той же причине.



Вместо геев объектом ненависти ожидаемо становятся трансгендеры: "Republicans Will End Left-wing Gender Insanity" или заглавными буквами с приплетением жупела: "CUT FEDERAL FUNDING FOR ANY SCHOOL PUSHING CRITICAL RACE THEORY, RADICAL GENDER IDEOLOGY, AND OTHER INAPPROPRIATE RACIAL, SEXUAL, OR POLITICAL CONTENT ON OUR CHILDREN".

"Project 2025" более многословный (900 страниц) и менее стеснительный. Все эти вопросы проработаны в нем в подробности, что заставляет Трампа и его избирательную кампанию пытаться дистанцироваться.



Расс Воут, со-автор проекта и платформы, работал в администрации Трампа на ключевой позиции директора OMB (Office of Management and Budget) и участвовал в задержке с выделением помощи Украине, из-за которой Трамп подвергся своему первому импичменту.

В предъявленных Трампу обвинениях имя Воута указывалось среди тех сотрудников администрации, которые отказались отвечать на повестку и предоставлять документы и показания Конгрессу:

He also was responsible for withholding crucial military aid to Ukraine as part of the scheme that led to Trump’s first impeachment. The Government Accountability Office found the latter move to be a violation of the law against “impoundment” that Congress passed in 1974.
Vought has argued that the anti-impoundment law and other post-Watergate restraints on the presidency need to be overturned. Accordingly, he’s one of the loudest voices for transforming the Justice Department from an independent agency into a tool for Trump’s vendettas.

Способность детальных планов, изложенных в "Project 2025", отпугнуть среднего избирателя, не следует считать глупостью авторов этих планов.

Когда глава Heritage Foundation Кевин Робертс говорит о "второй американской революции", он знает, что делает. Сплочения среди трампистов, максимизирующего их явку на выборах, можно добитъся, внушая им представление об их вожде, как о бунтаре и лидере восстания.
