the Wal-Mart movie.

As most of you probably know, Move On was helping get the word out for Wal-Mart: The High Cost of Low Price

Now as most of you know, I'm a pretty conscious consumer, and while I have stepped foot in a Wal-Mart, it was to run through the aisles of the toy section somewhere around midnight near Hartwick.  heheh... and I have scoundrel314 to thank for that ( Read more... )

It's cool that you realize there are lots of people without these options. I lived in a community where Wal-Mart was pretty much the only option unless you wanted a much longer drive. With me having seizures, that wasn't so much of an option for me. So I moved to Portland and now I've met you...life sure is funny sometimes... :D

And it seems that SO many people are in that same plight. It quite infuriates me.

There are indeed several in the vicinity, though most of them are not inside of Chicago proper and instead are in the near suburbs. I generally don't shop there myself, but any number of local people do consistently because the store is within their wage scale. Eric, for example, lives on a fixed income and so that's what's available to him. Can't condemn him for trying to stretch a buck (when he's not wasting it on booze and pot, that is).

Exactly. Depending on your income, you're stuck. So the question then becomes how to get low income folk higer income jobs. And one thing would be for Walmart to pay it's employees a higher wage so they could have an option to not put their paycheck back into the store. Arg.

As far as I know all that's true. I try and stay away from chain mega stores completely, Target, K-Mart, Walmart, etc.

I've found for kitchen stuff I'll go down to Chinatown. If money's going to China anyway, part of it should go to a small shop owner too, to my mind.

And those are just a few that came up when I did a google search for organic cotton sheets. :)

I'm familiar with the controversy surrounding Wal-Mart. The illegeal aliens, the low-wages, the crime that encompasses their lots... However, my best friend from high school - Crystal - her mother is a Wal-Mart employee and has been for several years. She's nothing special there, a simple clerk and customer service rep. to the min. income worker bees that go there for there every day needs. Therefore, I'm a regular consumer at Wal-Mart, not only because the government gives military a wage that qualifies them for welfare, but because I like the fact that I'm supporting a friend. It's naive, I know, but I still like to think that one day this multi-million dollar coorporation will one day beging to treat their employees the way they should be treated, at least with a higher wage.
Well, what's wrong with dreaming?

Nothing's wrong with dreaming. It's one of the most important functions of the brain, in my opinion.

But, I'm sure you can come up with other ways you can support your friend's mother, if you want to.
