It hasn't happened to me, so I don't have any case studies to examine personally, but one thing I noticed with this update is that certain directories, like the Program Files and Users folders, had some of their contents mirrored via symbolic links inside the Windows.old directory containing the previous version of the OS. Went to the DMV to register my car expecting to pay $130 for one year due to the $80 "hybrid fee" I paid last year. Turns out, back in February the Idaho state legislature partially repealed the fee. It now only applies to plug-in hybrids. As a result, I was able to register my car for two years instead of one, $102 total.

Subject says it all - took me that long to be bothered enough to stop driving around with hilariously expired California plates.

Northbridge fan on my desktop died, and it's gonna take a week or so for replacement parts to arrive in the mail. So I switch over to the laptop, and discover that the HGST Travelstar 1TB secondary drive suffered a head crash at some point. Oddly enough, the drive is still mostly accessible, but Windows Explorer won't let me in and the smart error ( Read more... )

A Crucial M500 240GB, preemptively replacing the 160GB WD Caviar that I've had for at least eight years. That drive still hasn't died, but I expect it to croak within the next year, bathtub curve and all...

Mom just got a job offer, for over twice what she's making now, at the hospital she's currently working at as a contractor. She's taking it, so assuming it doesn't fall through, we should start (finally) catching up on all our debts next month.

If you have to jump-start your car just to get its mileage, you might be a redneck.

Though it wasn't mine, it was mom's. Still...

Mom bought a water heater today, I cleaned out the garage enough so the thing could be installed. That's happening tomorrow. Who knew you need a fucking building permit to replace a water heater nowadays ( Read more... )
