What is a Shift?
A shift is a relatively minor change in the town, that probably won't have any permanence. Think of it like a glitch in reality. A room changes, a building may change. People may appear or disappear, or find themselves somewhere else, or even forget what they were doing a moment ago. Players may initiate Shifts any time they like.
What is a Change?
Changes, as the name implies, change the town. Like an update in reality, the entire face of the town may change to something unrecognizable. It may appear to be on another planet. Or it may only have minor changes. Changes cannot be initiated by players.
What's the deal with the Shift-y part of town?
Good question. You'll have to figure that one out yourself. As for the mechanics of it, the Shift part of town works like Changes, but only on the scale of its area. It will shift regularly every hour. Players may determine whatever its change may be whenever they like. It can be anything. Of course, you may not take anything from Shift Quarter to the rest of the town, and in fact, you may not influence the town in any way shape or form from the Quarter. You can't even speak to anyone outside of the Quarter. (Although they may be able to see you in it, you won't be able to see or hear them.) Shift Alley will never appear in the same way to any character twice.
But what if I wanted it to Change to something other than what someone else is seeing? Will I have to set it at a different hour?
No.
So I can't leave. Where do I live?
Well. There's an empty house at the end of the street. It's at the end of every street, oddly enough. Once you put your things down there, it stays put. Interestingly enough, the next time you look, you missed one house. Hopefully nothing in your home will Shift too badly. On your way out you'll see a Blackberry device sitting on a table near the door. If you take it, the device will adhere to you in much the same way any other object adheres to the town. You won't be able to lose it, throw or give it away, or break it. It will always return to your pocket the next time you stick your hand there.
Or more creative places if you haven't got pockets.
Let me guess, the Blackberry is how I call other people? And I can't call anyone outside of the town?
It is how you communicate with people on the other side of town, and the only thing that you'll have to get help with if something terrible were to happen to you. But you can call anyone in the town you like, not just other players. However, you'll need their number...and you'll need their number to be accurate at the time you call, too. Other 'new' residents seem to keep the same number all the time, with the odd glitch or shuffle. Native phone numbers seem to change often, and just because you're calling them doesn't mean they're all that interested in talking (nor that they have time to pick up at the moment).
You won't be able to make any connection through the barrier of the Shift Quarter, so be careful.
...Actually if you have their number you're perfectly welcome to call people outside of the town. Of course, the signal is rubbish and prone to dropping, so it might be hard for you to understand each other, and even if you do manage to get messages through it's not as if you can get help...since you don't know the name of the town and you can't quite remember the path you took to get here. No one can quite locate the town from the outside, either, it defies coordinates. Still, maybe they can look up something on it out there? If they can even be sure the urban legends and myths they might find are actually talking about your town, when you can't remember any details about it.
Anyway, do you really want to know that stuff? Aren't things just fine the way they are?
Okay, back on subject: the Blackberry, will I be able to broadcast or lock things, or will they be on a person-to-person basis?
As a default your call (video, audio, or text) will go out to anyone whose phone is on at the time, but if you call individual numbers (and you can queue multiples if you'd like, it'll just take the time to dial them all) you can call just them. Of course, you'll have to get their numbers first.
So what do I eat?
There are plenty of places to get food in a town. Go and get some. You have your methods. Did you bring money? Do you have services? Are you good at negotiating? Are you good at 'borrowing'? Figure out a way. Collecting money is pointless: you'll lose it as soon as it's off your mind, unless it's money that's been brought into the town from someone else. However, whenever you give money brought into the town to a native, that money will be back in your pocket the next time you check.
Oh. And keep an eye on that pie once you get it. Once you eat it, the town accepts it as your reality, so it won't vanish from your stomach. Until then, however, I'd suggest you keep your attention on the food and not the help, unless you'd rather go hungry.
What if I commit a crime or kill someone?
A crime or kill someone? Interesting turn of phrase.
If you commit a crime and get caught, you'll probably be punished, and you'll probably end up in the town jail. Hopefully you won't be forgotten about once there. If you kill an NPC, you might get caught. Oh, and they'll just be back as soon as you look away. If you kill a character, they'll vanish as soon as you look away. They'll also probably be pretty angry when they get back.
What happens if I drop?
What indeed? Maybe your character is sucked into the abyss? Then again, maybe they're put back home with no memory of the town? Maybe they even plucked up the determination to walk out of town in the night, and managed to overcome their need to go home. (For now.)
If someone picks the character back up, it could be a slightly alternate version, or it could be the same one. Maybe their memory has been warped, and their sanity strained from resisting the call of the town for so long. Who can say?
What if I die?
What crazy hijinks are you up to? Enjoy a long walk through an abyss that might just be Hell. You'll come out on the other side in the Town Hall in a week, but your psyche will be worse for wear. After all. you weren't in your beloved town that whole week, were you?
What happens if I hiatus?
Try it and see. Maybe your character vanishes in a Change or a Shift and comes back again later, dizzy and confused and with no memory but blackness from the time. Maybe they're dumb brave enough to try going out for a bit, and eventually find themselves running back?
Can I apply for a character who is dead in canon?
Yes. They'll wake up in the middle of the Town Hall like anyone else who wakes up in the town, apparently as alive and healthy as anyone else. They may also leave if they like and go home. Not only will the town call to them like a worried mother, though, they'll begin to grow weaker. If after a week they haven't returned, whatever their cause of death was will slowly inflict itself upon them, until they're back in their previous state by the end of the second week. After that, they'll have to walk their week through hell back to the town hall.
Will animated characters need PBs?
No. They'll of course be seen as if they had one (this is the Town of Change, not Toontown. Probably.) but actually having one OOCly is not necessary.
My character recognizes one of those notable NPCs from their own canon or experience!
No they don't. They just have one of those faces that remind you of that person a bit. Really, the icons and such are only meant as general ideas of the people who inhabit the town, not official PBs.
So wait, are the NPCs friendly or not? Do they remember us or forget?
Yes.
...Oh, alright. They're generally friendly and very much like an accepting small town. But no two are exactly the same (or are they?). Some are friendly, some are grumpy, some are crass and xenophobic, some are completely mad. Some of them are you.
As for whether they remember you...well...that depends on the moment you ask them.
What the @#*$^@ is going on?
You ask a lot of questions, pal. Find out for yourself. I did hear once, though, that something happened a long time ago which left a scar in reality. Try looking into that. Not that the townsfolk know anything about it.
Right?
