Reflection! Go!

Year Eight and counting.

1. What did you do in 2010 that you'd never done before?
I worked on a political campaign.

2. Did you keep your new years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
Last year I wanted things to be on the upswing, because things definitely ended on a down note. That undoubtedly was accomplished. This year, I don't really have any resolutions for the entire year. I'm going to keep going on this path that I have laid out for myself, and do everything in my power to continue this upswing. For the first week or two of 2011, I'm trying to cleanse my person a bit. I spent the last week of 2010 in Greensboro with my sister, and when they two of us get together, the hedonistic gluttony runs abound. Time to get some of that out of my system.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
I was just about to go into a schpeal about how I couldn't remember anyone close to me giving birth, and then I remembered. Melody Moss, one of my favorite cousins, had an adorable little boy. So exciting!

4. Did anyone close to you die?
No, I don't think so. At least, I didn't attend any funerals or anything. I'm sure I heard of someone dying or a celebrity I liked did.

5. What countries did you visit?
Canada and USA

6. What would you like to have in 2011 that you lacked in 2010?
Medication that works. A better attitude towards keeping and maintaining relationships. A bulked up savings account.

7. What date from 2010 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
June 11th was the day of my last campaign. I still remember that, but I'm not sure if I'll remember it forever. It was a pretty big deal, being introduced to the whole campaigning lifestyle, and I was very sad that it was over. Then I started another one in the end of August, but still. First one ending was pretty epic. Also, I don't think I'll forget November 3rd in a hurry. That was the end of my second round of campaigning, as well the entry date for my three-week-long hospital stay. That sucked.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
My attitude adjustment. My commitment to getting a handle on my seizures (even if I wasn't fruitful). Managing epilepsy and campaigning.

9. What was your biggest failure?
Some of the campaigns that I was on were pretty disappointing. I don't think they were personal failures though. The Democratic Party really fucked themselves over. I'd say not having seizures, but again. That's not really a personal failure. I did everything in my power this year to stay seizure free, and it didn't work. I failed, but not because of anything that is within my power.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
Apart from seizures, I was relatively healthy this year. I had a few bugs, but it was nothing compared to last year.

11. What was the best thing you bought?
This sounds dumb, but I spent $300 in NYC on a haircut in September. I can't tell you how good that felt... How it still feels. I know it was totally overboard and way too much money, but I swear. My hair still looks great almost 5 months later. For the first three months, I didn't have a single bad hair day. These last two, they are few and far between. I'd do it again in a heartbeat, and it was worth every penny, because of what it did to how I felt about myself. And my head. I bought a new cell phone, but I didn't get a 4G, something I regret. Apple replaced my laptop a few times, and that was pretty cool, but those don't count as purchases, now do they?

12. Whose behavior merited celebration?
I'm really proud of Khaki, and what she's done for herself this year. I feel like her commitment to her prosperous future is something that really should be celebrated a lot. We're Generation Screwed, and each and every one of us have a tough road to hoe to be successful, and her determination deserves a party.

13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?
The Democratic Party. They let the enormous publicity stunt that was the Tea Party movement wipe away people's memories of the eight years prior. They weren't organized, they stalemated themselves, and they were a complete embarrassment. We lost a crap-ton of seats in the House and Senate because they couldn't get their shit together to compromise. The GOP is united, and until Democrats can do they same, we'll be shut out every time.

14. Where did most of your money go?
Spending money on the campaign trail. Going out, buying clothes, getting set up in new cities, etc, etc. I spent an obnoxious amount of money doing that.

15. What did you get really excited about?
Each and every campaign. It's a high like no other. I don't know if you can count my video EEG as something I was excited about. I was looking forward to learning more about my epilepsy, but mostly, I was just petrified.

16. What song(s) will always remind you of 2009?
Six O'Clock Train and the Girl with Green Eyes by John Hartford.
Break Your Heart by Taio Cruz
The Talking Heads
John Hartford
Leon Elam

17. Compared to this time last year, are you
i. happier or sadder?: happier
ii. thinner or fatter? probably the same, maybe a little thinner.
iii. richer or poorer? richer, for the sheer fact that I have prospects.

18. What do you wish you'd done more of?
Saving money.

19. What do you wish you'd done less of?
Seizing.

20. How did you spend New Year's?
Last year, I went to a party with Michelle. I helped some dude change a tire in the rain. I accidentally sent out a jillion text messages to like, everyone. I talked to a lot of people who did phone tech support for Apple. It was neat.

This year, Khaki and I had a night. We started at my house for an hour while I finished getting ready. We had a glass of wine and a nice visit. Then we went to her parent's house for pork tenderloin and fancy drinks. Then we changed and went to her brother's party. That was a lot of fun, although kind of strange, considering the age difference. The boys there were ridiculous, and the cops came on a noise violation. Very college-y. Then we got Cook Out and went to bed. Quite adventurous.

22. Did you fall in love in 2010?
I didn't fall IN love, but I found a lot more love in my life, if that makes any sense.

24. What was your favorite TV program? of 2010?
Oh, I don't know. I didn't really commit to any programmes this year. I always enjoy 30 Rock. Pushing Daisies was incredible, and inspired me to bake pies. AFV always has a special place in my heart.

25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
I really don't think so. Hating requires a lot of effort, and I'm wildly lazy.

26. What was the best book you read?
I have no idea.

27. What was your greatest musical discovery?
I had heard of him before, but I fell into deep, passionate love with John Hartford. Phoenix also worked it's way up my musical list as well.

28. What did you want and get?
The sacrifices hard hard times that I made at the end of last year were fruitful. I am happier, in a healthier place, and have a good idea about the next steps on this path to keep my future bright.

29. What did you want and not get?
Less Seizures.

30. What was your favorite film of this year?
I don't have a clue.

31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
24. I had a mellow birthday celebration this year, with just a dinner out with a few friends. It was small and nice.

32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
Managing all that money I made better, have of course, having less seizures.

33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2010?
Cute with a side of being a bum. STILL.

34. What kept you sane?
Campaigning, my friends, and, to be totally honest, booze.

35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
I fell in love with Rahm Emanuel, which is silly. The dude sent a pollster a dead fish, and only has half a pinky. How cool is that?! Obama is pretty fantastic, too.

36. What political issue stirred you the most?
The Mid-term elections. Health Care.

37. Who did you miss?
I went to make a list of the people that I missed this year, and it got too long. Pretty much everyone in Raleigh and Greensboro while I was out campaigning. Everyone involved in my campaigning group while I was at home. There was a lot of missing going on this year.

38. Who was the best new person you met?
Leon. He worked on a bunch of the same campaigns that I did this year, and has been a fantastic mentor. We'll be friends for a long time. Also, Ben. Oh, Ben. He's a wonderful boss, and a totally fun person.

40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year:

"It's empty in the valley of your heart
The sun, it rises slowly as you walk
Away from all the fears
And all the faults you've left behind

The harvest left no food for you to eat
You cannibal, you meat-eater, you see
But I have seen the same
I know the shame in your defeat

But I will hold on hope
And I won't let you choke
On the noose around your neck

And I'll find strength in pain
And I will change my ways
I'll know my name as it's called again

Cause I have other things to fill my time
You take what is yours and I'll take mine
Now let me at the truth
Which will refresh my broken mind

So tie me to a post and block my ears
I can see widows and orphans through my tears
I know my call despite my faults
And despite my growing fears

But I will hold on hope
And I won't let you choke
On the noose around your neck

And I'll find strength in pain
And I will change my ways
I'll know my name as it's called again

So come out of your cave walking on your hands
And see the world hanging upside down
You can understand dependence
When you know the maker's hand

So make your siren's call
And sing all you want
I will not hear what you have to say

Cause I need freedom now
And I need to know how
To live my life as it's meant to be

And I will hold on hope
And I won't let you choke
On the noose around your neck

And I'll find strength in pain
And I will change my ways
I'll know my name as it's called again"

-The Cave by Mumford & Sons
