I never feel so alone as when I'm at home in New York with my family. Why is that? It's also the only place I've ever felt discrimination. That makes me incredibly sad.

I've been on vacation all week and yet I'm utterly exhausted. Because they're too busy texting in incomplete sentences to learn how to understand language more difficult than their own.
In other news, my CV and job letter are nearly finished and now it's on to my dissertation abstract, so I'd probably better figure out what my diss is actually about.

Joblist time
I'm trying to figure out how to write a job search letter and have no idea what I'm doing. Even all the examples I have aren't helping. I think that's fundamentally because I don't know what kind of job I really want. If I apply for a lit job I'll almost necessarily be leaving behind creative writing, which means I need to leave that out of my ( Read more... ) -

It's been an anxious couple of days. I've never really felt like this place is home, but now that it's on the verge of utter destruction, I'm starting to feel like maybe I have built some sort of life here. At lunch today, K said that someone on my comps committee, when I was out of the room, said my annotations were "intellectual epiphanies." Dude. -
Mystery suggestions?
So I passed comps yesterday (woohoo) and now I want to spend the next couple of weeks reading books that weren't written between 1850 and 1950. I think I'd like to read some good murder mysteries, something I haven't read since high school. Any suggestions? I'm looking for something with really strong writing, not too gory or gruesome, maybe ( Read more... )
