Chapter 29

“So, you kissed me.”
Cara watches Kahlan who sits there as if frozen. The brunette looks at anything but the detective and, although her stomach grumbles in complaint, puts her fork back down.
Maybe she shouldn’t have asked that question so bluntly, Cara considers. But then again it is the one single thing that has been on her mind since the moment she’d felt Kahlan’s lips on hers.
“Cara I… I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to…I mean I wasn’t…”
When Kahlan begins apologizing, Cara regrets her decision of not having set Kahlan straight right from the beginning. Back then it had felt too much like an invitation if she’d told her that she didn’t have a boyfriend and now Kahlan thinks that she has kissed a woman who is in a relationship with a guy, no less.
“Do you regret it?” she asks instead, stopping Kahlan’s hasty apologies.
Blue eyes widen for a moment and finally the brunette looks at Cara. There is a tiny smile on her lips as she shakes her head.
“I shouldn’t have done it, but no, I don’t regret it. Not a single second of it.”

For whatever reason this kiss has been a tiny revelation all in itself and Cara has eventually realized that she wants nothing more than to be a part of Kahlan’s life. To be allowed to kiss those lips every day, all day. And hearing now that the brunette doesn’t regret it is like balm for her confused feelings.
“Neither do I,” she answers slowly.
“And just for the record, there is no one. No boyfriend, or manfriend.”
Cara grins and watches Kahlan release a relieved breath.
They both turn back to their food and eat in companionable silence, each busy with their own thoughts.
And while Kahlan keeps on smiling, Cara can’t seem to think of anything else but wanting to kiss the other woman again. She knows that it is crazy, insane even, and yet she feels drawn to her in a way that she never thought possible. And judging by that kiss Kahlan must feel remotely the same.
When they finish their impromptu dinner and Kahlan gets up to move to the kitchen Cara quietly follows her. She watches the brunette put the dishes into the sink and then steps forward until she stands very close behind her, breathing in that wonderfully unique scent.
“You know it could be considered creepy to sniff on someones hair while they’re not looking,” Kahlan mumbles and Cara can’t help but chuckle.
“Am I creeping you out?”
“No. You’re just confusing me.”
Kahlan doesn’t turn around and Cara doesn’t step back.
“How so?”
“I feel things… I want to do things…” Kahlan admits.
“And I know I shouldn’t because, really? This would only make things a lot more complicated.”
“Yes it would,” Cara agrees. “And yet here we are.”

Cara knows that they have been skirting around this moment for quite some time now. The gazes, the touches and the almost kiss are proof enough.
Aren’t they feeling the same thing?
Cara knows that she wants to kiss Kahlan again, wants to keep kissing her, and she just knows that Kahlan wants it too. So what is holding them back?
Maybe she belongs into Kahlan’s life after all. Maybe there is a chance for them to work it all out.

The detective eventually decides to take charge of things and raises her hands to rest them on Kahlan’s hips to gently draw her closer until she can actually place a kiss against that soft pale neck she has been staring at for the past minutes. A shiver runs through Kahlan and she exhales audibly.
“Cara… there is so much you don’t know and…and I’m afraid you won’t be here anymore once you find out,” the brunette whispers, her voice suddenly shaky.
“I will be here, I promise,” the detective replies, trying to sound as sincere as she feels.
For some reason she knows that she wouldn’t leave Kahlan’s side if she could help it. Whatever the other woman might be hiding, Cara is certain that they can work trough it together and make it out alive and well in the end.
Cara has never been a person who blindly believes in anything, because the truth is not always what it seems to be, and yet she has faith that Kahlan is the one missing part of her life that she has now found and won’t let get away ever again.
Slowly Kahlan turns around in her arms and when their eyes meet it’s like the air is charged with electricity. Not a single word is spoken and yet they understand one another perfectly.
Cara slowly leans forward until she can feel Kahlan’s hurried breaths on her face. She gently places her lips against the corner of the brunette’s mouth, giving her time to change her mind, to push her away and run. But when she closes her eyes and a small whimper escapes her, Cara leaves a trail of tiny kisses between the corner of Kahlan’s mouth to her upper lip only to finally settle on those wonderfully soft parted lips.
She gives both of them time to adjust until she coaxes a breathy sigh from Kahlan, followed by a tentative tongue trying to taste and explore.

Things get a lot more heated from that moment on, and while Kahlan gains confidence Cara struggles to keep up.
There is a desperate need about Kahlan’s kiss and soon Cara feels hands tugging her impossibly closer while a strong thigh find its way between her legs.
How did they get to that so quickly? Does it really matter?
They’re both panting when Kahlan grabs Cara’s hand and leads her through the living room to a small bedroom that smells very distinctly of the brunette.
Kahlan pushes Cara onto the small bed at the far end of the room and follows her on hands and knees.
There is such a hunger in those blue eyes that it makes the detective shiver in anticipation.

“Y-you know I’m not entirely… I mean I haven’t got much experience… with this…?”
The detective gestures between them somewhat awkwardly.
“Improvise.”
Kahlan grins and cocks her head to the side.
“Isn’t handling unknown situations with ease part of the job description?”

Cara chuckles quietly, somewhat more at ease with the entire situation. She wraps her arm around Kahlan’s waist and pulls her down on top of herself. The feeling of that wonderfully soft body pressed against her own is so exquisite that Cara moans quietly and uses her free hand to take a hold of the back of Kahlan’s head to pull her down for another languid kiss.
Their lips meet and it’s the most wonderful thing in the world when Kahlan’s tongue gently pries the blonde’s lips apart.
After moments of simply kissing and enjoying the feel of the other, Kahlan moves her hand between their bodies and begins unbuttoning Cara’s blouse. She drags her fingertips across every inch of exposed skin, causing Cara to writhe and moan beneath her.
When the last button is undone the detective pushes Kahlan back and sits up, promptly pulling the garment off her shoulders.
It’s discarded somewhere in the room and while Kahlan is still busy admiring the sight before her Cara curls her fingers around the hem of Kahlan’s shirt and pulls it up and off over her head.
When they both had their share of staring at the beauty before them Kahlan leans down yet again and hungrily claims another kiss while Cara’s hands settle on the brunette’s hips and slowly travel upward to her lower back.

Cara only hesitates when her fingers brush over something, she isn’t entirely sure what, and she leans back to look at Kahlan, her brow crinkling in confusion.
Suddenly blue eyes widen with shock and Kahlan jerks back.
“I…I forgot…” Kahlan stammers and basically scrambles off Cara and away from her.
“What…?” Cara asks unsure and slightly afraid that she might’ve done something wrong.
She reaches for Kahlan when the brunette turns around and her hand tightly wraps around a slender wrist while they both freeze and remain completely motionless.
Cara is staring at Kahlan’s back and her heart clenches at the sight of it.

It is completely covered with scars. Small ones to large ones that run from her shoulder to her hip. Some are just really faint while others are scarred welts, the ones Cara must’ve touched just moments ago.
Kahlan’s shoulders are so tense that she is shaking with the effort of holding still under Cara’s gaze.
“I’m sorry,” Kahlan says quietly. “I should’ve known…”
She quickly frees her wrist out of Cara’s grasp and reaches for her shirt to pull it back over her head. But Cara is faster and moves to kneel behind Kahlan on the bed.
“No. Please, don’t…” Cara whispers and carefully, as to not scare Kahlan off, unclasps the black bra she is still wearing and pulls it away. Kahlan lets it slide down her arms and to the floor before moving back to sit on the bed.
The detective carefully rests her hands on Kahlan’s shoulders and trails kisses from her neck to her shoulder blade. Kahlan shivers and exhales shakily.
“Is this okay?” Cara asks quietly. She doesn’t know why her heart is beating so frantically in her chest as if she is running a marathon.
“If it is for you…” Kahlan says quietly. “I mean if they bother you, just…”
“No,” Cara interrupts gently. The scars all across Kahlan’s back are a part of her just as her blue eyes are, and she still thinks the brunette the most beautiful woman she has ever seen, despite those little imperfections. Or maybe even because of them? It doesn’t matter in the end because she knows that she is falling head over heels for this mysterious yet vulnerable woman, and she can’t do anything to stop it.
For some reason Cara is pretty certain that Kahlan has never before shown those scars to anyone, let alone allowed them to be touched.
The detective moves her hands slowly and gently drags her fingertips across the welts and marred skin. Kahlan tenses immediately and sucks much needed air into her lungs.
The tension in her shoulders only lessens when Cara continues her gentle ministrations, letting her fingers map the skin of Kahlan’s back with careful strokes.
She then lowers her head and places kisses against the spots her hands have left vacant.
“Cara…”
The detective scoots back on the bed and waits for Kahlan to join her. They settle comfortably next to each other, facing the other, and Cara wraps her arms around the brunette’s waist, pulling her close and relishing the feeling of bare skin touching bare skin.
Cara leans forward and begs access to the brunette’s mouth once again.
Now their explorations are slow, hesitant almost, and Cara moves her arms to let her hand wander across the bare flesh of Kahlan’s torso. Across her ribcage and a perfectly taut stomach, until her fingertips deftly open the button of her jeans and pull down the zipper. The noise seems disturbingly loud in the small room that is only filled with the sounds of their breathing.
“You have no idea what you are doing to me, do you?” Kahan whispers against the detective’s plump lips, smiling.
Cara smirks back at her as her hand slips beneath the waistband of Kahlan’s jeans.
“I think I might have a pretty good idea.”
