Chapter 30

The first thing Kahlan notices is the smell. There is a very distinct scent about her room that definitely does not belong there. She is confused for several moments until her slightly sore body cooperates and she raises her head from the pillow to look around.

Luckily the music in the next apartment hasn’t started blaring through the thin walls yet and Kahlan has a moment of utter silence to regard the sleeping body next to her with a calm serenity.
Cara is sleeping on her stomach, face turned toward Kahlan, while one arm is possessively thrown across the brunette’s waist.
A smile plays across Kahlan’s lips and alights blue eyes with happiness and contentment. There is a warm feeling emanating from within her, spreading through her entire body and warding off the morning chill in her room.
Dahlia hasn’t returned home yet and everything seems to be just too close to perfect.
Last night had been amazingly wonderful, pleasurable, passionate and yet so very different from everything she ever experienced that it is almost too painful to admit that she will never again in her life meet someone like Cara.

Kahlan had long since stopped yearning for physical contact the day she woke up in a hospital, her entire back just a bloody mess from the explosion she had been caught in. As time went by the wounds had healed, but the invisible walls around her had remained.
Now Cara has waltzed into her life without asking for any sort of permission, bringing her old self back with nothing more than a smile and kindness.
Kahlan slowly reaches out and brushes her fingertips across the detective’s forehead down to her cheek, watching with amusement how the blonde crinkles her nose at the touch.
Maybe this is her chance at a new start in life, maybe Cara is what she has needed all this time to find back to herself again, Kahlan muses.
Back when she had still been an agent of a government organization that never officially existed, she thought that the job would be enough to fill her life. But on that one day, in a desert country with nothing but sand and guns, she had not only lost her faith in people but also a tiny part of herself that had always believed fate would never be cruel to her.
She had felt the bitter sting of betrayal, by one of her own partners no less, and since then trust has been something elusive and foreign.
The scars remind her every single day of how naive she had been, and whilst she swore to never again allow another person into her life, she is now living with her cousin while undeniably falling for a certain blonde detective.
Maybe she will be able to tell Cara the entire story someday, because if she should ever be able to trust again, then it is the blonde whom she will give more than just her heart.
She has buried those thoughts, the memories, somewhere deep down where she herself wouldn’t be forced to stare at them head-on but now, after realizing that she is not all alone in this world, they return to the surface with less intensity and anguish in their wake. Definitely a step in the right direction, Kahlan thinks and wraps her fingers around the arm Cara has still draped over her waist.
She strokes the soft skin beneath her fingertips and inhales deeply. Oh yeah, the scent of their last night’s lovemaking was going to linger in here for quite a while now.

Kahlan rolls onto her side and leans down to place a kiss against a bare shoulder.
Cara mumbles something unintelligible and wriggles around to scoot closer to Kahlan in her sleep. The brunette chuckles quietly and moves closer once again to trail the tip of her tongue down the sleeping detective’s shoulder blade. This has Cara squirming, almost but not quite on the brink of waking.
But before Kahlan has the chance to continue her sweet little tour across the planes of Cara’s body her cell phone rings somewhere in the pocket of her discarded jeans. Moving around until she has located the item of clothing. she leans her upper body down from the bed to pull the cell out and flip it open without actually having to get up.
“This better be important…”
Of course she knows that all people who have this number wouldn’t call without a solid reason, so she sighs quietly and holds the cell phone to her ear.
“They have her!”
Rahl is almost yelling and Kahlan immediately shushes him before lowering her voice. She feels Cara stir behind her but doesn’t turn to see whether the detective is awake or just moving about in her sleep.
“What are you talking about?!”
Kahlan’s voice is barely above a whisper and yet carries several emotions that are neither good nor happy.
“They have Jennsen. They… I don’t fucking know how they figured it out. But now… those goddamn diamonds. Shit shit shit!”
While she tries to decipher Rahl’s angry exclamations she sits up, her back still to Cara, the soft blanket previously wrapped around her falls down to her waist.
“Alright, calm down! Who has Jennsen?”
“The Paciello’s - they’re Dewitt’s archenemies so to say. They’ve been trying to push him out of the business for decades. How the fuck was I supposed to know that Eriksson stole their fucking diamonds!”
“Okay, wait, let me get this straight, they kidnapped…”
Kahlan cringes at the word.
“…Jennsen to get the diamonds back that we got back from those guys, which were stolen from them in the first place?”
There is a moment of silence.
“Exactly!” Rahl then exclaims.
She can almost see him raking a hand through his dark hair in nervous desperation.
“So, give them the diamonds in exchange for her?”
Kahlan doubts that this is a possibility or else Rahl would have already acted and made the exchange happen.
“Dewitt won’t just give them to me…”
“What?!”
“He doesn’t give a shit about my sister…”
Rahl sounds so very defeated in that moment that Kahlan says the first thing that comes to her mind.
“I’ll get them.”
Another stretch of silence.

“Don’t be ridiculous.”
“No, I’ll do it. We’ll get her back.”
“He’ll kill you.”
“I will think of something. Trust me.”
Kahlan brushes a few strands of hair away from her face and gets up to walk a few steps toward the window.
“Arrange everything, let me know where it will go down and I’ll come with the stones.”
“You’re insane…”
“You want her back?”
“Yes!… Okay alright, let’s do this then. I don’t know how to… Thank you. And I mean it.”
Kahlan briefly smiles and nods although Rahl can’t see her.
“Yeah. You owe me big time after that.”
“If we’re still alive after that. Later.”

She snaps her phone shut and drops her hand to hang limply by her side. Without realizing it she might have just signed her own death contract. And she hasn’t even as much as hesitated before offering to help Rahl. What is he to her? She hardly knows him and owes him absolutely nothing. It’s also not exactly her problem that Jennsen has been kidnapped and neither is she responsible for it. In the end she can’t really explain why she so readily agreed to risk her life for two people she barely knows. Maybe it is because she wants to believe that Rahl would’ve done the same thing had they taken Dahlia away from her.
Despite having gotten Dewitt off her back, she is fairly certain that he will not leave her alone just like that, and maybe this is an opportunity for both Rahl and her to finally free themselves of his grasp.

“Kahlan?”
The brunette spins around and finds a sleep-tousled Cara looking back at her.
“What’s going on?”
“N-nothing… But I have to go. There is something I need to take care of. Can’t wait.”
There is only so much she can do to stop her face from giving away what she really feels inside. And of course Cara is not one to be fooled that easily.
The detective gets up from the bed to move toward her, but Kahlan quickly walks to her dresser and pulls out some underwear, a shirt and jeans.
“I’d really love to stay, but… well you can stay in bed as long as you want to. Just ignore my cousin if she comes back…”
She has her shirt already pulled over her head when Cara is suddenly in front of her and stops her hasty movements by catching her wrists in her hands.
“Kahlan.”
“Yes?”
She is completely unable to meet that sea-green gaze.
“Please don’t do this. You know I can help you… whatever you need.”
Kahlan shakes her head vehemently. She frees her wrists of Cara’s grasp and steps back.
“I cannot and will not drag you into this. Please understand…”
“No! You need to understand that I am here for you…!”

Instead of continuing this discussion Kahlan pulls on her jeans and sits on the bed to lace up her boots before getting up and grabbing her leather jacket. Slinging a small black bag over her shoulder she hesitates with a hand on the doorknob.
“If you leave now I don’t know if I’ll be here when you come back.”
Kahlan lets her eyes slip close, every beat of her heart pumping sorrow through her veins.
She clenches her jaw and tries to ignore the lost and anguished quality to Cara’s voice.
Of course she has no other choice but to leave, but it would be a waste of words telling Cara that. The detective doesn’t seem to understand that all she is trying to do is protecting those who are dear to her.
“Good thing I know where to find you then…” Kahlan answers so quietly that she isn’t sure whether Cara has even heard her before she slips out of the room, possibly making the biggest mistake of her life.
