So, I’ve completed the second half of Once Upon a Time season three; what I suppose will eventually be known as the Oz arc (just as the first half of this season was the Neverland arc). And ... Yeah, I guess I’m in this for the long haul. I’m still a bit queasy on the use of historical people/events to shape a schlocky horror story, and some of the moral ambiguities are still rather dodgy... but there’s a few interesting character nuances as well, and the grand scheme of witches trying to claim a country of their own is fairly promising ( Read more... )

I’m still torn between “begrudgingly amused” and “totally disgusted” by this show. Like I said in my last review, it’s still early days, so I can’t quite tell whether the conflict is carefully nuanced, or just a mess. This has been on my watch list for a while, but learning that Colin Morgan is going to be in the second series sent it right up to the top of the pile (sorry Arrow and Reign, you’ll just have to wait a bit longer). Right from the start, OUaTiW had one clear advantage over the mother-show: it had a planned beginning, middle and end. It had a set amount of time to tell its story, and it did so. The characters had a clear arc to follow and (most of) the story beats were wrapped up satisfactorily. I’m going to miss it, but better to end things on a high-note - ( Read more... )
